In the summer of 2002, police were called to a gas station in Charleston County after customers reported that the clerk was nowhere to be found. It was a tough week for law enforcement in South Carolina with the shooting of a Charleston County deputy, the killing of a SLED K-9 and the death of a deputy in Richland County. Sheriff Kristin Graziano talks about the search of a suspect which led to Master Deputy James Gilbreath’s shooting injury and the shooting death of K-9 Rico, along with the death of Deputy Jacob Erin Salrin of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in a vehicle collision. Illiteracy is a nationwide problem that affects children and adults, and it’s something that’s not going to disappear any time soon. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office has been working to help reduce those numbers locally by bringing literacy to residents at the Juvenile Detention Center and the Detention Center.
