As nutrition science advances, we learn that a healthy diet is about more than just the number of calories you consume. The sources of your calories and the composition of your diet are also significant. Our bodies rely on fat, carbohydrates, and protein for energy. Most people eat more carbs than fats or protein, but many diets suggest tinkering with the formula.
Some people opt for a diet much higher in protein than usual. This is usually called a keto diet (short for ketogenic). Joe Whittaker was the lead researcher in a study investigating how a high protein diet would impact the Hormone Balance of 309 men. Dr. Whittaker works at the University of Worcester in the United Kingdom and specializes in nutritional therapy.
The participants were placed on a diet of 35% protein for two months. He discovered that this high protein diet disrupted Testosterone Levels in the participants to a significant degree.
On average, the men experienced a 47% drop in Testosterone. This Hormone Imbalance was not asymptomatic, as many subjects reported increased fatigue, sexual dysfunction, muscle weakness, and depression.
