It’s no surprise that celebrities have been committing crimes and (mostly) getting away with it since the dawn of Hollywood. Whether it be from murder, hate crime hoaxes or college admissions scandals, it can sometimes be hard to remember that they, like us regular folk, can also suffer from a tragedy and be left with unanswered questions.

Mark Ruffalo was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Marie Rose (née Hébert), a hairdresser and stylist and Frank Lawrence Ruffalo, who worked as a construction painter, who also had two daughters and another son, Mark’s sisters, Tania and Nicole, and his brother Scott. Growing up, Ruffalo attended both Catholic and progressive schools through his education and had described himself as a “happy kid” during those years, despite struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia and ADD both as a child and a young adult.

It began as nothing more than a routine training flight. At 2:10 p.m. on December 5, 1945, five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers took off from a Naval Air Station in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The planes—collectively known as “Flight 19”—were scheduled to tackle a three-hour exercise known as “Navigation Problem Number One.” 

Their triangular flight plan called for them to head east from the Florida coast and conduct bombing runs at a place called Hens and Chickens Shoals. They would then turn north and proceed over Grand Bahama Island before changing course a third time and flying southwest back to base. Save for one plane that only carried two men, each of the Avengers was crewed by three Navy men or Marines, most of whom had logged around 300 hours in the air. The flight’s leader was Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, an experienced pilot and veteran of several combat missions in World War II’s Pacific Theater.

At first, Flight 19’s hop proceeded just as smoothly as the previous 18 that day. Taylor and his pilots buzzed over Hens and Chickens Shoals around 2:30 p.m. and dropped their practice bombs without incident. But shortly after the patrol turned north for the second leg of its journey, something very strange happened. For reasons that are still unclear, Taylor became convinced that his Avenger’s compass was malfunctioning and that his planes had been flying in the wrong direction. The troubles only mounted after a front blew in and brought rain, gusting winds and heavy cloud cover. Flight 19 became hopelessly disoriented. “I don’t know where we are,” one of the pilots said over the radio. “We must have got lost after that last turn.”

The temperature drops, the once verdant leaves tumble wistfully to the concrete below and an eerie feeling settles like a black, gauzy veil as the promise of Halloween approaches. ‘Tis the season for mayhem and mystery, a time of year where we indulge our darker interests and allow ourselves to be intrigued by the ghosts of the past. In the Galapagos—an archipelago off Ecuador’s coast—an unsolved mystery from the 1930s still haunts the island of Floreana.

Back in the 30s, the Galapagos were largely uninhabited and far from the tourist attraction it has morphed into today. For Berlin doctor Friedrich Ritter and his lover and former patient, Dore Strauch, the promise of solitude was too much to resist. The pair embarked on a four-week journey from Berlin to South America, where they waited a month in Guayaquil before sailing to the island of Floreana.

On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart flew toward Howland Island, one of the last stops on her attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Nearing the tiny Pacific island, she radioed the Itasca, a United States Coast Guard cutter sailing off Howland’s coast, to ask it to guide her onto land with radio signals.

Earhart’s last confirmed message indicated that she was flying on a northwest-to-southeast navigational line that bisected the island, but she did not indicate in which direction she was heading. After that communication at 8:43 a.m., radio contact was lost, and no one knows what happened next.

The mystery of whether two British adventurers were the first to reach Everest's summit has long intrigued the public. But do we really want to know the truth?

As a tale of doomed, romantic endeavour, it has endured for decades.

It is also Everest's most persistent mystery - did George Mallory and Andrew "Sandy" Irvine make it to the top in 1924, almost 30 years before it was officially conquered?

The pair, equipped with primitive climbing gear, were last sighted a few hundred metres away from the summit before bad weather closed in around them.

What really happened aboard the Mary Celeste? More than a century after her crew went missing.

The British brig Dei Gratia was about 400 miles east of the Azores on December 5, 1872, when crew members spotted a ship adrift in the choppy seas. Capt. David Morehouse was taken aback to discover that the unguided vessel was the Mary Celeste, which had left New York City eight days before him and should have already arrived in Genoa, Italy. He changed course to offer help.

Morehouse sent a boarding party to the ship. Belowdecks, the ship's charts had been tossed about, and the crewmen's belongings were still in their quarters. The ship's only lifeboat was missing, and one of its two pumps had been disassembled.

“The Younger Lady” is the title given to the mother of King Tut whose mummified body was discovered in 1898 in the Valley of the King’s in Egypt in the tomb KV35 by archaeologist, Victor Loret.

The mummified corpse was found naked and damaged (due to tomb robbers) alongside two other bodies – one of which was later discovered to have been her mother, Queen Tiye and the other a young boy around the age of 10. The Younger Lady was found to be five foot, two inches (or 1.58 m) tall and had died between the ages of 25 and 35.

In the early twentieth century, a popular piece of art for the fashionable French home was L'Inconnue de la Seine (translation: "the unknown woman of the Seine"), a completely creepy death-mask (pictured at left) of a young woman whose body had been pulled from the Seine River in Paris, sometime in the 1870s or 1880s. As the (somewhat questionable) story goes, a pathologist at the morgue found the unknown woman's face enchanting, so he made a death mask, a plaster casting of her face. 

The resulting cast was widely reproduced and became both a popular objet d'art, as well as extremely influential to writers, artists, and indeed young girls who attempted to replicate her (dead) looks. And you thought your friends were goth in high school....

Nobody knows what her name was. We don't know her age or background. How her life brought her to Paris, and left her drowned in the River Seine.

In October of 1944, two GI’s from Peterson Air Force Base were hunting near Lake George. One of them, Master Sergeant Francis Brahler, hiked up to a remote granite outcropping. A reflection from the sun caught his eye. Further inspection revealed an actual glass window in the rock, completely hidden from view below. Brahler managed to slide the glass to one side, shimmied through the window, and discovered a secret cave dating back a half century.

The cave Brahler found solved one of Park County’s greatest mysteries. It all began in 1892 when a local rancher, Gottlieb Fluhmann, vanished into thin air. Fluhmann had immigrated from Switzerland in 1866. A skilled surveyor and gunsmith, he had taken up ranching by 1876 in the Puma Hills some three miles north of Lake George. But Fluhmann appeared “peculiar” to his neighbors. For starters, he was only 5 feet, 4 inches and spoke broken English with an odd accent. He also coddled his cattle and even named them. His modest cabin and outbuildings were well kept, but Fluhmann’s ranch was located off the beaten path. Few seemed to visit him, an exception being a young boy named Dan Denny.

Michael "Mike" O'Rourke, aka "Johnny O'Rourke" or "Johnny-Behind-the-Deuce", was a professional gambler of the Old West, whose notoriety is mainly due to Old West lawman and legend Wyatt Earp's having saving him from being lynched in Tombstone, Arizona Territory in 1881.

O'Rourke first surfaced in Tucson when he was 16, where he developed into a talented poker player. He was often accused of cheating, but more often than not his accusers recanted in view of his reputation for being good with a gun and fast on the draw. There is evidence that O'Rourke had a fast temper and was prone to altercations, but none to support his having been in any gunfights.
