  • August 3, 2020 – National Grab Some Nuts Day | National Watermelon Day

Can Your Believe Our Favorite Snacks Have Been Around for Thousands of Years?

Welcome to  August 3rd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate grab and go protein and juicy fruit.

For thousands of years we have enjoyed the convenience of some protein on the go in a handful of nuts. Word has it that walnuts have been picked from trees since 7000 BC; the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon supposedly had dozens of pistachio trees; and ancient Greeks used hazelnuts for medicinal purposes—they believed the nut could actually cure baldness. Here in America, the most popular nut is not actually a nut at all. As much as we love peanuts, it may surprise you to know that it’s technically a legume. No matter what variety you prefer, a small serving of nuts packs a lot of protein and healthy fats. On National Grab Some Nuts Day, celebrate this healthy snack on the go or settle in for some mixed nuts for a party in a can.

If you’re feeling the heat of the dog days of Summer then you will appreciate National Watermelon Day.  This fruit has long been prized for its refreshing quality and contains about 92 percent water.  While today’s watermelons are juicy and sweet, ranging from bright red and seedless to yellow, orange and white, wild melons were bitter and tasteless. That’s the reason we believe that ancient cultures began cultivating the flowering vine as soon as they discovered the thirst quenching kind.  There were even seeds and art depicting watermelons in the tombs of pharaohs, though the melon reached its full potential in recent times.  The Guiness Book of World Records boasts the heaviest grown watermelon at 262 pounds.  That’s enough refreshment for a whole village!  On National Watermelon Day, celebrate the sweet success of this fruit that knows how to beat the heat.

  • August 2, 2020 – National Coloring Book Day | National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

Remember When Coloring Was Your Favorite Pastime? Guess What - It's Still Calling Your Name!

Welcome to  August 2nd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate coloring outside the lines and a sweet sandwich.

There’s an easy way to tell which kids are the conformists and which are the rebels. Give them a coloring book. Some will carefully go over each picture, staying inside the lines and making sure that no colors overlap. Then there are the kids who attack the page with such zest for life that they create works of modern art. Whichever side of the fence they fall on, everyone can agree that coloring books are awesome. There’s no better way to spend a rainy afternoon than plopping down on the floor with a stack coloring books and a box of crayons. Come on adults, you know it sounds like fun too, not to mention a great way to relieve stress. Skip the date with your TV and color outside the lines on National Coloring Book Day.

If you’re a fan of the ice cream sandwich you can thank a push cart salesman, who invented the treat in 1899. Though his name remains a mystery, it’s believed that this crafty entrepreneur peddled the first ice cream sandwich for 1 cent in the Bowery neighborhood of New York City. Soon copycat carts popped up everywhere, and by the 1940s ice cream sandwiched between two wafers were sold in grocery stores across the country. Today even high end restaurants offer a gourmet version of this delicious dessert. Certain brands make almost 100,000 sandwiches a week and it’s estimated that around 50 percent of all ice cream sandwiches are consumed on the Eastern Seaboard.  On National Ice Cream Sandwich Day celebrate your own tasty version of this perfect Summertime mashup

  • August 1, 2020 – National Girlfriends Day |National Disc Golf Day

How Do You Celebrate Your Besties?

Welcome to  August 1st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate “bff”s and a good walk unspoiled.

While there are other days that celebrate friendship, National Girlfriends Day is all about the girls.  And as Cindy Lauper says, most of us just wanna have fun.  If you haven’t seen your besties in awhile, today is the day to look them up. Spend time reminiscing about the glory days or plan a future vacation together, down to the last detail.  After all, there is likely no one who knows you better, which comes in handy when you’re in the mood to actually laugh out loud. On National Girlfriends Day celebrate the bffs who know what’s best when it comes to having fun.

Mark Twain described the game of golf as a good walk spoiled, and while he might not have been the first to say it, anyone who has ever played the game knows why.  The sport played with clubs can be maddening.  Disc golf on the other hand is decidedly simple and for this reason its popularity rose in the late 1960s.  While both games are played on a green and tally the number of tries it takes to reach the target, disc golf is easy for anyone to play and requires little equipment, making it perfect for families and people of any skill level.  That doesn't mean it’s not a competitive sport and even the International Olympic Committee recognized Flying Disc Sports in 2015. On National Disc Golf Day enjoy a good walk unspoiled with family and friends.

  • July 31, 2020 – National Avocado Day | National Get Gnarly Day

Dude, How Do You Get Gnarly?

Welcome to July 31st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a green superfood and getting gnarly .  More after the break from Anna Devere.

While Ancient Aztecs knew the power of the mighty green avocado, it took a modern company to put this fruit on the map.  Today we celebrate National Avocado Day thanks to two gals from California who saw the potential in this versatile wonder.  Danika Brysha and Camille May founded their company Model Meals to deliver heart healthy fare and avocados fit the bill perfectly.  The two even carry “purse avocados” for a convenient way to get a midday dose of healthy fats and vitamins. And if you love avocados you're probably aware that they show up in way more than bowls of guacamole. On National Avocado Day add this creamy fruit to soups and smoothies and even cream pies for a rich taste that's worth celebrating.

If you’ve been craving some adventure in your life then National Get Gnarly Day is your day to break free.  Like the gnarly waves that surfers chase, getting gnarly is all about doing something over the top that sets your heart on fire.  And if you need some inspiration think of Hulda Crooks, born in 1896, who at age 54 decided to take up mountain climbing.  She was an avid runner, but never considered hiking or climbing, until her husband passed and a bout of pneumonia left her feeling weak. That didn’t keep her from scaling Mount Whitney at age 66. And another 23 ascents gave her the title of “Grandma Whitney.”   Then at age 91, Hulda climbed Mount Fuji in Japan. Gnarly!

  • July 30, 2020 – National Intern Day | National Chili Dog Day

Did You Know That Some Legendary Careers Were Launched As Interns? Today We Celebrate Starting At the Bottom and Top Dogs.

Welcome to July 30th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the lowest rung on the ladder and top dogs.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Today we celebrate National Intern Day and for anyone who’s starting out on the bottom rung of the professional ladder we thought you might like to know how a few other interns launched their legendary careers.  When a 17 year old kid with a passion for film snuck his way onto the lots of Universal Studios, no one questioned the upstart.  Young Steven Speilberg networked in secret till he found an executive who would watch his homemade film.  And while Speilberg tackled his ambition for filmmaking head on, albeit through the backdoor, some interns took a more circuitous route to their illustrious careers.  Bill Gates started out as a Congressional page and Brooke Shields took an internship at the San Diego Zoo.  On National Intern Day, celebrate the road to your own success by following your heart!

We wrap up National Hot Dog Month with a regional spinoff that takes the American classic to a whole new level: the chili dog.  And while everyone wants to take credit for their invention, all variations of chili dog have one thing in common: confusing names. The Texas Weiner became popular in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Coney Island Hot Dog didn't come from Coney Island at all - it’s from Michigan. And the Michigan Hot Dog? That’s from New York. Confused? So are we. But one thing’s for sure: hot dogs topped with chili are some of the best comfort foods around. On National Chili Dog Day, enjoy this classic combo and forget the fight of who discovered it first.

  • July 29, 2020 – National Lipstick Day | National Lasagna Day

    What is Your Favorite Shade?

Welcome to July 29th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we perk up our pucker with a gorgeous shade and lip smacking sauce.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

If you love to get attention for your perfect pucker, then you’re in some very good company.  While lipstick has been controversial throughout the ages: here are few who supported its use. It is believed that George Washington wore lipstick and Winston Churchhill thought that lip color boosted morale in an excellent way.  On the other hand, Queen Victoria thought it impolite to wear lip rouge and British Parliament in the 1770s banned its use, calling lipstick a devilish attempt to trick men into marriage.  No matter which side of the argument you find yourself on, National Lipstick Day celebrates the freedom to flaunt those gorgeous lips anyway you please.

As Garfield the cat will tell you, lasagna is amazing. And what’s not to like: cheese, meat, pasta, tomato sauce - it’s heavenly. But making one from scratch is a labor of love. It takes longer than you think to boil the noodles, prepare the sauce, and other ingredients that are alternated in layers before being baked in the oven.  Maybe that’s why it’s considered a feast day dish in Italy for holidays such as Easter and Christmas.  But we do know this: lasagna has been around awhile.  In 1284 a famous Italian writer saw a hungry friar eating the dish and noted: I’ve never seen anyone stuffing himself on lasagna with cheese so pleasurably and so fully as him. No word if that friar’s name was Garfield. On National Lasagna Day, feast away at your local Italian restaurant or surprise your family with your own labor of love.

  • July 28, 2020 – National Milk Chocolate Day | National Anti-Boredom Month

Can Your Favorite Flavor Beat Boredom in its Tracks?

Welcome to July 28th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a few of our favorite things.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Most people credit the Mayans and Aztecs for bringing us drinking chocolate but today we celebrate this nectar of the gods in solid form on National Milk Chocolate Day.  It was a Dutch Chemist who invented the process of separating cocoa butter from cacao in the early 1800s. But in 1875 when Daniel Peter mixed powdered milk with chocolate liquor, the milk chocolate lovers rejoiced!  Chocolate is loved the world over and here in North America is no exception, with a whopping 71 percent of us preferring milk to dark chocolate!  Companies such as Hersheys are definitely celebrating this fact today and so should you, with a drizzle or a bite of your favorite flavor.

This time last year we were celebrating water parks but with so many closed it seems like a good time to celebrate National Anti-Boredom Month.  Most of us have gotten quite good at fending off boredom with loads of practice while social distancing.  Tic-Tock is full of new found dance routines, and folks have taught their pets all kinds of silly tricks, but in case you’re running out of ideas, here are a few favorites we hope you’ll find useful:

    * Make a music playlist and ask all your friends to contribute their favorite songs.* Tackle that pile of family photos and organize them into albums.* Take up a new hobby or learn a new language.

Anna: These all sound like work Marlo.  I thought you were gonna suggest something fun like run through the sprinklers.  That’s sort of like a water park.

  • July 27, 2020 – National Scotch Day | National Crème Brûlée Day

Today's Celebrations are the Essence of Smooth.

Welcome to July 27th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a sip of class and the essence of smooth.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Whiskeys get their distinctive tastes from the distillation process or the type of barrels in which they’re aged. In the case of Scotch whiskey the flavor comes from peat taken from bogs and marshes around the Scottish countryside. Peat gives Scotch its unique smoky flavor. And the level of smokiness depends on the time the barley grain is exposed to peat smoke during the 30 hours it dries before being distilled. Meant to be sipped from a glass, or even paired with a fine cigar, Scotch should be savored. So if you’re in the mood for a “sip of class” pour yourself a dram and celebrate National Scotch Day.

And speaking of smooth, nothing is silkier than crème brûlée.  It starts off with cream that is steeped with vanilla, sugar and egg yolks that all end up in a warm bath that is baked to perfection in the oven.  With a crisp, caramelized sugar shell, this creamy custard has been an elegant finish to any meal since 1691.  My signature cupcakes include a nice dollop of crème brûlée nestled in the center of a chocolate cupcake and topped with raspberry mousse.  Someone dubbed this flavor World Peace cupcake.  Maybe I should share the recipe on National Crème Brûlée Day.

  • July 26, 2020 – National Bagelfest Day | National All or Nothing Day

Can You Guess What's on Marlo's Bucket List? Hint: It's Not Bagels.

Welcome to July 26th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a regal carb and taking the plunge .  More after the break from Anna Devere.

In the 17th Century an Austrian baker presented the King of Poland with a new creation. Based on the king's love of horses, the baker made a circular, doughy bread shaped like a stirrup, or “beugel.”  Rumor has it that bagels have been a favorite in Poland ever since and when Polish immigrants set up bakeries in New York’s Lower East Side people started celebrating the bagel Stateside with a generous schmear of cream cheese. On National Bagelfest Day, stop by your local bakery or coffee shop and enjoy a breakfast fit for a king.

Today we celebrate going for broke on National All Or Nothing Day. If you have been putting off a challenge, get ready to take the plunge on an exciting new adventure, a bucket list dare or a much needed change that’s been holding you back.  This can be much more fun with family or friends and however you celebrate be sure to let others in on the fun.

Anna:  Does this mean that I have to go skydiving with you?

    Marlo: Actually I would prefer...

  • July 25, 2020 – National Day of the Cowboy – National Wine and Cheese Day

Can you guess Marlo's picks for Wine and Cheese Day? Nothing goes better with your favorite Western.

Welcome to July 25th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate Wild West legends and perfect pairings.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

The mere mention of The Old West conjures images of saloons, train robberies, and shootouts at high noon. The western frontier in the 1800s transformed not only the landscape but also the folks who set out to create fame and fortune for themselves. William Henry McCarty Jr., an orphan from New York City reinvented himself as Billy the Kid. Martha Jane Canary became Calamity Jane. And Jesse James, one of the few men who kept his real name, became one of the most notorious outlaws ever. Each of their stories has been told and retold and become the stuff of legend. On National Day of the Cowboy, watch one of your favorite westerns or read up on some of the gunslingers who forged the American West.

Few things go better together than wine and cheese and because each has been elevated to an art you can find all kinds of expert advice on making the most of this pairing.  Or you can try my picks such as a Pinot Noir and Gruyere; or Stilton and Port; and who can resist a good Sauvignon Blanc with Goat Cheese?

Anna: Marlo are you reading off of the internet?

Marlo: Why do you say that?

Anna: Because never in a million years would you pick goat cheese.
