  • March 3, 2023 - World Hearing Day | National Cold Cuts Day
Welcome to March 3rd, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate protecting our ears and a better bologna.
    Marlo: Anna, what’s going on?
    Anna: What?
    Marlo: What’s going on?
Anna: It’s World Hearing Day, we’re bringing attention to hearing loss.
    Marlo: Wanna dance?
    Anna: What?
    Marlo: Wanna…dance?
Anna: The World Health Organization states that 5% of the world’s population is affected by hearing loss. Of course loud sounds can affect our hearing but prolonged exposure to sounds about as loud as a gas powered mower can also cause hearing damage. On World Hearing Day, pay attention to the sounds around you and learn to protect your hearing.
Bologna isn’t exactly fancy, but this lunchtime staple has very distinguished origins. The lunch meat known as Mortadella was created in Bologna, Italy and became a food coveted by nobility and peasants alike. Its popularity grew so much that people began making counterfeit versions. This became such a problem that in the 1600s a law was passed that made counterfeiting Mortadella punishable by death. Talk about taking your lunch seriously. But make no mistake, Mortadella is a far superior product. Think of it as gourmet bologna. Celebrate National Cold Cuts Day with a sandwich made of fresh cut deli meats. Just make sure you ask for the real stuff.

Welcome to March 2, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate golden oldies and loveable authors. Anna: Hey Marlo did you ever watch the game show $100K Pyramid? Marlo: Hosted by Dick Clark? Of Course I did! Anna: You wanna play? Marlo: Sure! Anna: All the clues will be things that are old. Ready? These items come in 33s, 45s, 78s and are played on a turntable. Marlo: Vinyl Records. Anna: This Rolling Stone is known for his strut and pouty lips and is now a great grandfather. But he is best loved for his mark on children’s literature and today we honor him with a poem of our own. From the biggest of big to the smallest of small, books open worlds to every and all. With stories of zazzles and hooplahs and rats, dragons and castles and ponies and cats. Pages of whats its, who dance with their snoodles. And swim with their frogs and their dizzles and poodles! • March 1, 2023 - World Music Therapy Day | National Dadgum That's Good Day

Welcome to March 1st, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate transformational music and food that’s dadgum good. Music is a universal language. Some would say it’s a tool for transformation. Bill Protzmann of San Diego, California has an impressive musical background. In high school he mastered the piano by performing ragtime, classical and big band styles. Bill found that music has a way of stirring the soul, whether it’s the sound of “charge” at a baseball game or the soothing sound of your own voice at a sing along. These days he takes that effect to heart with his own organization, musimorphic. Since 2010, Bill has volunteered with at risk individuals experiencing post traumatic stress, homelessness and even substance abuse. Check out musimorphic.com to see how some people celebrate World Music Therapy Day every day. And if you happen to be in Balboa Park, join Bill and his artist wife Rebecca for a sing along. Anna: Walk like an Egyptian... Marlo: What are you doing there Anna? Anna: I’m cooking like an Egyptian. Have you ever had Egyptian food, Marlo? Marlo: Can’t say that I have! Anna: Well today is National Dadgum That’s Good Day and I’m whipping up a tasty meal of Kafta which is a beef kabob with garlic and parsley and onion; Kashari has spices with rice, lentils and pasta with a spicy tomato sauce and dukkah; a mixture of pistachios, hazelnuts, cumin, coriander ... here, have a taste! Marlo: Oh, that is Dadgum Good! You know what else is Dadgum Good? Peanut butter! Anna: I’m not eating that. Marlo: You don’t like PB&J?! Anna: Nope, you can celebrate National Peanut Butter Lover's Day all by yourself. I’m Anna Devere and I’m Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. • February 28, 2023 - National Chocolate Soufflé | National Tooth Fairy Day
Welcome to February 28, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate kitchen magic and tales about teeth.
Souffle is a French word meaning “to puff or blow up” and when paired with chocolate the results are intoxicating. But don’t let the fancy word fool you, for if you are brave enough to conjure some stiffly beaten egg whites, you’re halfway to creating this masterpiece in your own kitchen. Lots of people shy away from making souffles because they believe the results are elusive, but with some tricks up your sleeve you’ll be a wizard in no time. The key is to keep things quiet while the souffle bakes, as any loud noises will cause them to fall. Straight from the oven, few things are more delightful and on National Chocolate Souffle Day you’ll be celebrated for your kitchen magic!
When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published photographs of two girls surrounded by fairies a new craze was stirred. Children's imaginations took flight and this fascination became useful for teaching kids everything from eating their vegetables to getting fresh air. Then in 1927 Esther Watkins' play known as the Tooth Fairy sparked a tradition we still honor today. For nearly 100 years since then, teeth have been magically transformed into money by the mysterious fairy folk. On National Tooth Fairy Day, celebrate this legendary fairy that kids adore.

  • February 27, 2023 - National Kahlua Day | National Polar Bear Day
Welcome to February 27, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate crazy origin stories and loveable predators.
The world knows about the Mexican liqueur Kahlua mainly because of a Canadian bartender. In 1977, Peter Fich created a shot called the B-52. This mixture of Kahlua, Bailey’s, and triple sec became so popular that the demand for the coffee-flavored liqueur skyrocketed. But why did Fich give the shot that name? He named the shot after his favorite band. The B-52s. And the band had named themselves after a beehive-style hairdo called the B-52... Which had been named after the B-52 bomber used by the United States Air Force. Is anything NOT named B-52? Jeez. Celebrate National Kahlua Day with a cocktail made from this classic coffee-flavored drink.
The Arctic Circle is home to the largest four legged predator on earth. Polar bears are beautiful, but make no mistake they are built for hunting. With super powers such as traction on the ice and the ability to smell their prey from over 20 miles away, most other animals don’t stand a chance. And polar bears are not afraid to take a dip to catch their favorite prey, the arctic seal. They are perfectly camouflaged with a beautiful white coat that is actually made up of translucent hairs. The fur only appears white because it reflects the color of snow. On National Polar Bear Day celebrate this amazing predator by learning more cool facts.

  • February 26, 2023 - National Pistachio Day | National Tell A Fairy Tale Day
Welcome to February 26, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a practical nut and time honored tales.
When it comes to nuts, some are just plain addictive. Take pistachios for instance. The global consumption for just one year can reach over one and half billion pounds. Because they are easily cracked from their shells, most people eat pistachios by the dozens. And that means piles of leftover shells when you are done snacking. But did you know there are plenty of ways to recycle them? Some people use them as kindling to start a fire. Others line the bottom of potted plants with shells for better drainage. Salted pistachio shells can make a border for outdoor plants, because the salt keeps snails and slugs away. And the nuts themselves are full of nutrients for healthy snacking. With all this good news National Pistachio Day is the perfect time to get cracking.
“Once upon a time…” This is probably one of the best-known openings to stories ever. We’ve all heard it since we were small children each time we read a fairy tale. And what comes after that is always something to inspire the imagination. Giants, wicked stepmothers, talking animals. And of course princesses and heroes. Fairy tales were passed down as oral stories for generations until the Brothers Grimm came along and collected them in a book. On National Tell a Fairy Tale Day, share one of these beloved stories with the kids in your life or entertain the kid in yourself with some fascinating fiction.

  • February 25, 2023 - National Heart Month | National Clam Chowder Day
Welcome to February 25, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate healthy hearts and avoiding the heat in the kitchen.
Valentine's Day has come and gone, but there’s still time to celebrate someone who deserves your attention: you! February is National Heart Month and this is the perfect time to take a few small steps that can make a big impact. Speaking of steps, it takes as little as 30 minutes of exercise, five times per week to jumpstart your overall well being. Learning about heart healthy foods can help you celebrate every day because even swapping out some of the junk for delicious healthy food can make a world of difference. The key is understanding that your small positive choices add up and believing that you are worth it!
If you are ordering clam chowder today you might want to take note of where you’re dining. If you happen to be in New York, for example, don’t even think about ordering the cream based kind. You see Boston and New York have a rivalry that dates back to the days of colonization, and this extends to the world of soup. New England clam chowder is a rich, cream based soup made with potatoes, onions, and pork fat. The Manhattan version is tomato based. They are equally delicious, but don't tell that to any New Englanders. The region is so against the Manhattan recipe that someone once introduced a bill in the Maine legislature to ban the use of tomatoes in chowder. On National Clam Chowder Day, enjoy a delicious bowl of this seafood favorite, but watch out for the hot controversy.

  • February 24 - National Skip The Straw Day | National Tortilla Chip Day
Welcome to February 24, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate saying no to the straw and daredevil chips.
One of the biggest man-made structures on the planet wasn’t created on purpose. Out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is an object known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It covers an area twice the size of Texas and is comprised mostly of plastic bottles and bags. But one of the other big contributors is the plastic straw. These everyday items not only contribute to pollution, but also kill fish and other sea animals who eat them. On National Skip the Straw Day, try using a paper or reusable straw. Maybe even try drinking without one. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.
One of the best parts of eating at a Mexican restaurant is gorging on chips and salsa before the meal arrives. But sometimes, one tortilla chip is more than enough. For the past few years, a company called Paqui has been daring customers to eat one of their chips. Just one. The catch is that this one tortilla chip is spicier than almost any other food. To be specific, it’s 8,000 times hotter than a jalapeño pepper. The single black chip comes in a coffin-shaped box with a giant skull on it. We are in no way recommending that you try this, but be sure to check out videos of the One Chip Challenge on YouTube. And celebrate National Tortilla Chip Day with some mild mannered chips and dip while you watch videos of the brave, crazy people who think they can handle spicy food.

  • February 23, 2023 - National Toast Day | National Chili Day
Welcome to February 23, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a toast to toast and mixing up chili.
    A Toast to Toast
On any given morning, a chill hangs in the air.
You shuffle to the kitchen and give the fridge a stair.
With one eye closed you grab a loaf of any random bread
Fresh or stale, it matters not… there’s one thought in your head.
It only takes two minutes or three at very most.
To transform ordinary bread into the crispy toast.
And as you watch the butter melt pleasingly away
You raise a cup of coffee to the best start of the day.
    Happy National Toast Day!
Ever have chili with cinnamon? If not, you’ve probably never been to Cincinnati and experienced their take on the dish. Cincinnati chili isn’t as thick as the traditional stuff and it’s usually served as a sauce on other foods. The most popular way to eat it is over spaghetti. And when ordering, there’s a system for doing so—called “ways.” If you know the lexicon, it’s easy. Two way means spaghetti topped with chili, which is the basic version. And if you order a five-way chili, you’ll get the same thing, but with the addition of beans, chopped onions, and cheese. Sounds weird, but if you’re in Cincinnati on National Chili Day, give it a whirl. It’s surprisingly good.

  • February 22, 2023 - National California Day | National Margarita Day
Welcome to February 22nd, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate Gold Fever and wasting away the tropical way.
California as we know it might not exist if it weren’t for James Wilson Marshall. In 1848, he was building a sawmill near Sacramento for his employer, John Sutter. Here he spotted something shiny in the river. It turned out to be gold. Although the men tried to keep the find to themselves, news got out and soon people were coming from all over the country to strike it rich. In the span of a year, the population of the area increased from 1,000 to over 100,000. Because of this gold rush, California suddenly became much more important to the United States and became the 31st state in 1849. On National California Day, celebrate the Golden State, and the accidental discovery that made it what it is today.
The 1977 song Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet struck music gold. Though it wasn’t until 2016 that the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the trail that it blazed made Buffet a legend. He was introduced to the cocktail at an Austin, Texas restaurant and finalized the song lyrics while vacationing in Key West. It remains Buffet’s highest charting solo single. If the long winter has you dreaming of Summer and warmer weather, cozy up to your favorite flavor, frozen or on the rocks. A margarita won’t actually make the cold weather go away, but it always feels like celebration when you order this paradise in a glass. Stop looking for your lost shaker of salt and enjoy National Margarita Day.
