  • October 18, 2021 - International Legging Day | National No Beard Day
Welcome to October 18, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate getting a kick out of fashion and great moments in beard history.
Although it’s a year-round staple, when the temperature drops down in the Fall it’s officially legging season. Once a necessity that provided an added layer of warmth, leggings are now part of an iconic style that’s both comfortable and fashionable. Leggings truly set a trend in the 1950’s and ‘60 as a standard workout and wardrobe essential. Over time, breathable materials, textures and designs ushered in the undeniable era of leggings. Modern leggings are a feat of engineering designed to enhance your workout and your dressy side. On International Legging Day, kick up your style with this fashion essential.
At one time Alexander the Great controlled the largest Empire in the world. Legend has it that he also started a custom that lives on to this day. Men shaving their faces. In 331 BC, Alexander lost a key battle against the Persian army. He witnessed the soldiers grabbing his men by their beards, to hold them in place, while stabbing them with a spear. Before they fought the Persian army again, Alexander ordered his troops to shave their beards. They won the next battle and Alexander went on to become one of the most powerful rulers in history. You may find yourself grumbling as you’re shaving for work today, but on National No Beard Day, celebrate the fact that nicking yourself with a razor isn’t as bad as getting poked with a spear.

The Tradition Of Shaving Your Beard Was Once A Matter Of Life & Death!

  • October 17, 2021 - National Mulligan Day | National Pasta Day
Welcome to October 17, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate second chances and noodling around.
A mulligan is a do over or a chance to hit the reset button. In golf it’s a term that means taking a second shot if things don’t go according to plan. No one is exactly sure which Mulligan gave us this term whether it was David Mulligan from Canada, John “Buddy” Mulligan from New Jersey or Thomas Mulligan from Ireland. All three were passionate about the game of golf and all three knew the value of blowing off a bad shot. It’s never too late to reframe your thinking with a fresh perspective or a brand new start, on or off the golf course. On National Mulligan Day, give yourself a break and tee up a whole new outlook.
Italians had been enjoying their pasta for centuries before someone came up with the idea for a dried version of the food. This simple innovation allowed the pasta to keep longer and it soon made its way around the world on Italian ships. In the 1500s, explorers brought back tomatoes from the Americas, and you would think that’s where the pairing of red sauce and pasta got its start. But people thought tomatoes were poisonous, and it was nearly 200 years before someone incorporated them into Italian cuisine. Since then, pasta and tomato sauce have been forever linked. On National Pasta Day celebrate with a plate of spaghetti and meatballs. Or ravioli. Or baked ziti. There are so many kinds of pasta and sauce, you just can’t lose.

  • October 16, 2012 - National Sweetest Day | National Sports Day
Welcome to October 16, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate sweet rewards and healthy competition.
National Sweetest Day encourages everyone to be generous even in the smallest ways. From its inception as Candy Day in 1916, this day reminds us that even small tokens improve the lives of those around us. And if you’re so inclined you can spread this sweetness around during the rest of the month, as it’s also National Dessert Month and National Caramel Month. Everyone can use an extra dose of sweetness right about now, whether it’s a drizzle of caramel or a small card or phone call. On National Sweetest Day, take care of all those who need extra attention.
Organized sports were introduced to the world at the first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. The first events were based on training for war and hunting—races, wrestling, jumping, and javelin throwing. And that’s a good thing. Because it became a way for people to prove who was better and hash out differences without hurting one another with weapons. Sports are cathartic and bring people together. You can see it at most amateur and professional sporting events: Athletes scream and yell and try to beat their opponents, but when the game is over, they congratulate one another. They laugh. They shake hands and hug. Because in the end we’re all human and that’s what counts. On National Sports Day, celebrate the spirit of friendly competition!

  • October 15, 2021 - National I Love Lucy Day | National Cheese Curd Day
Welcome to October 15, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate love at first sight and bringing back that squeaky feeling.
If your life ever feels like an episode of Job Switching, where Lucy has to beat the conveyor belt of candy by hiding them in her mouth, chances are you’ve already fallen in love with Lucy. This iconic tv show first aired on October 15, 1951 and for audiences it was love at first sight. That’s because the show featuring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley was a program of firsts, including the first show to be performed before a live studio audience. In four of its six seasons, I Love Lucy was the most-watched television show in the United States and to this day it still stands on TIME Magazine’s list of top 100 shows. On National I Love Lucy Day, catch up on your favorite episodes and fall in love all over again.
In the mid 1800s settlers from all over Europe brought their cheese making secrets to Wisconsin. By 1922 there were more than 2,800 factories in the rich farmland of this state. Today Wisconsin produces over 2 billion pounds of cheese each year. This process starts with separating the curd from the whey, but the curds that eventually become cheddar are the gold standard for snacking. These ones contain the long proteins that squeak against our teeth. If your curds have lost that squeaky feeling, a few seconds in the microwave can bring it back. On National Cheese Curd Day fry up a batch of the freshest you can find and enjoy a true American favorite.

  • October 14, 2021 - National Dessert Day | Squirrel Awareness Month
Welcome to October 14, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate rich desserts and crafty critters.
According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the most expensive dessert in the world is the Frrrozen Haute Chocolate ice cream sundae from the restaurant Serendipity 3. This frozen dessert is made with a blend of the priceless cocoas and 23 karat gold flakes. It’s served in a goblet lined with edible gold. But wait, there’s more! If you order this confection, you get to keep the goblet, the diamond tennis bracelet wrapped around its base and the gold spoon. And all for the low, low price of $25,000! In case you were wondering, the previous record for most expensive dessert was a mere $1,000. Kinda looks like a bargain, now. On National Dessert Day go ahead and pull out all the stops.
In 1979, one of America’s smallest and weirdest celebrities made her debut, Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel. Chuck and Lou Ann Best rescued a baby squirrel that had fallen out of its nest and the little animal soon became part of the family. As a joke, Chuck built her a pair of Styrofoam skis and attached them to his daughter’s remote controlled boat. But Twiggy surprised everyone by taking to this sport so quickly. Word got out and soon Twiggy was making appearances on news shows around the country. For nearly 40 years, this tiny performer and her offspring have entertained audiences across the country. During Squirrel Awareness Month, celebrate these crafty little critters by giving them the right of way on the road and on the water.
