Ezekiel 4:4-17

Why would God tell a prophet to lie on his side for over a year, ration his food, or bake bread over dung? This morning we will see that Ezekiel's strange actions weren't random, but were powerful images revealing the devastating reality of sin. Through these unforgettable (and weird) signs, we see that sin carries a weight we cannot bear and it ultimately leads to judgment. But Ezekiel's story doesn't end with judgment, it points us to Jesus. Ezekiel could only symbolize humanity's problem, Jesus became the solution. He bore the weight of our sin, becoming the true Bread of Life, that takes on the judgment we deserved so that we could receive His grace.

Acts 17:24-27

Whether it be for significance, fulfillment, fame or love, everybody is searching for something. In Acts 17, Paul presents the God of the Bible as the Creator of all, a God who is both powerful and personal, and who longs for all people to find Him. It is only as we find God through His Son Jesus, that we can be truly satisfied.

Numbers 22:22-35

Some texts in Scripture are confusing, others troubling, and some just seem silly. A talking donkey? That falls in the latter category. But the message is serious: God uses messengers of His choosing – vessels that the world may label as foolish, weak, and despised – to speak His words, and His words only – words of blessing. This blessing, ultimately found in Christ, has been given to His people now – the church – to continue the blessing of Abraham to all nations.

Yet the real wonder is not the talking animal, but the sovereign God who rules both the visible and invisible world, restrains human foolishness, and faithfully accomplishes His purposes. While Israel remains completely unaware of the danger around them, God protects His people, keeps His promises, and turns an intended curse into blessing. This passage reminds us that our greatest assurance is not our ability to understand or control everything, but God’s unwavering faithfulness, ultimately revealed in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 10:34-39

The characterization of Jesus as a peace-loving hippy that the general population holds of our Lord does not actually square with the Biblical account of the Gospels. Jesus said some truly shocking and radical things that polarized the people of his day: Jesus came to bring a sword? Does that sound like following Jesus will mean an easy life? With these words Jesus cuts to the heart of what it means to be his followers: division, opposition, even combat with the world. As Jesus is embraced and accepted by some with joy he will also be vehemently rejected by others with contempt. The result is inevitably a sword: even among those we hold dearest. This is the cost of following Jesus; this is what it means to be his disciple. He must have our supreme allegiance. There can be no middle ground. The call to faith is the call to forsake all and follow Jesus. Have you counted the cost?

Matthew 10:34-36

We often picture Jesus as gentle, compassionate, and the “Prince of Peace.” But in Matthew 10, He says, “I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” These aren’t two different versions of Jesus. The same Saviour who brings peace with God also divides. Drawing a clear line between those who follow Him and those who don’t, even within the closest relationships.

Deuteronomy 20:16-18

The accounts of God’s commands to the Israelites to devote the peoples of Canaan to destruction have at times been used to portray God as vindictive or even as a moral monster. Yet when these texts are read carefully in their broader biblical context, a different picture emerges: while God’s judgment on sin is real and at times severe, He consistently reveals Himself as one who delights in mercy. That truth reaches its clearest expression in the sending of His one and only Son, who bore the judgment we deserved so that we might receive the mercy we could never earn.
