Janelle is the owner of Janelle Joy Private Editing. Along with her team, she runs a business doing private editing for photographers all over the world. She is building her own empire in the editing world! I loved chatting with Janelle because even though we didn't know each other at all, our journeys are so similar. Not only did she share her story of growth, but how to grow your own team AND tips for entrepreneurs getting started, too.

She started her business as a hobby and built it into an empire! On the podcast she elaborates more on how she built her business and why she shifted. We both believe that God led our businesses to where they are, and are so grateful for his guidance along the way.

Blogging is crucial for growing your business, especially to strangers and people you don't know. The more content you have, the more places you have that content, the better you're going to be able to reach more people and grow and just explode. 

I started my business in 2011. In 2013, I started blogging three to five times a week. I made a commitment that I would post three times a week. And I haven't quit since seven years in.

I started with a pattern:

MONDAY: Educational

WEDNESDAY: Client Experience

FRIDAY: Personal/Behind the Scenes

I blogged three times a week even when I didn’t have shoots on the calendar. What happened next is six months later, I became the number one spot on Google. When you search on Google for Logan Utah Photographer or Logan Utah Wedding Photographer, you find Kylee Ann Studios.

Blogging is not a thing of the past. Blogging exploded my business. I went from a family and friends photographer to a full associate team. 

1. It’s easy to see your growth and remember your clients.

2. You can reach new audiences every day.

3. Its a great way to share your portfolio!

4. Blogs are EVERGREEN content that continues to serve and be found daily.

5. It’s how you get to the top of Google

6. Its the easiest way to get your stuff ALL over Pinterest!

When Kaelynn was expecting her first baby, she was looking for a way to make an income. One night she was on Etsy shopping for a wood play gym. The only options were hundreds of dollars and shipped internationally. Instead, they decided to go to Home Depot and get the materials to make their own.

They listed it on Etsy and waited. And waited. And waited. For about a month. Once they made their first sale, they knew they could make another. They handmade 650 wood play gyms in her parent's basement before they began to outsource.

One of her biggest challenges along the way in her business was growth. There's so many things to manage -- inventory management, finance management, hiring a team that catches your vision. And there are so many growing pains that you go through along the way

She could see clear spikes in business when she:

Outsourced manufacturing

Outsourced shipping to a third part logistics (3PL) company

Started using Facebook Ads

Hired us to do Product Photography!

Hired a nanny so she could have work hours

(After the first shoot she did, she made $500 in sales the day she posted the new photos!)

Back to school has been so hard for our family. And I KNOW we are not alone. Brody's school is two days in person and three days online with live zoom calls scattered throughout each day. Piper is four days in person, 1 day online but drop off is 4.5 hours after Brody's. And Ro's nap time is exactly when we need to be getting Piper ready for school. Add in masks and pandemics and you have yourself a seriously stressful week.

Today I interviewed my friend and fellow mom boss @bremiller on how she is managing her 5 kid's crazy schedules now that school is back in session. She is sharing all the secrets, and keeping it real...like she always does.

There have been SO many emotions around the newest feature on Instagram — excitement, nervousness and pure dread to name a few. So today we’re talking all about REELS on the podcast.

First of all, what is reels? Reels is VERY similar to TikTok but inside the Instagram app. You can record and edit 15 second video clips, add music and words and share on your stories, feed AND reels explore feed. I know many of you are thinking what I was thinking.

When I started Kylee Ann Photography nearly a decade ago, I was shooting everything from weddings to families to births. After years of hustling nights and weekends, I realized I was starting to miss my kid's soccer games and nights with my family. And something had to change.

I had TWO options. Cut back and just take great pictures of my kids for fun or transition to shooting brands and work during the day during school hours instead. It was then and there that I committed to being a brand photographer.

My business quickly went from nights and weekends, to 10-2 four days a week for a consistent, amazing paychecks monthly...even in the slow season.

After I niched into commercial photography:

- I filled up my calendar monthly with repeating clients instead of constantly having to market for new business

- I made 5 figures every month, even during slow season

- I stopped missing soccer games, and kept my work hours within my big kid's school schedules

- I made paychecks and was able to shoot products EVEN and ESPECIALLY during a global pandemic

I am passionate about teaching photographers how find their niche in Small Brand Photography and become profitable photographers without giving up their lives.

My parents are entrepreneurs so goal setting was a regular family activity in our home. I LOVED setting goals, and still do. But every year was the same. We would set goals in January, and we’re only working on a few if any at all by December. I was even doing the S M A R T goals.

Goals without plans are just dreams. I have had a lot of dreams in my life, and in the life of my business. But about a year ago I decided I didn’t just want to set dreams. I wanted to create PLANS.

We need to make goals and then SET PLANS to make those goals happen. This episode is all about setting goals backwards and turning goals into action plans.
