As communities continue to grow, so does the demand for places to play, train and compete—but across the country, access to recreational space is becoming harder to come by. From packed ice rinks and overbooked soccer pitches to limited pool time and crowded courts, the gap between demand and available facilities is becoming impossible to ignore.
So, what’s behind the shortage, and more importantly, what can be done about it? Is this a matter of funding and infrastructure, or are there creative solutions we haven’t fully tapped into yet? And as private facilities begin to enter the mix, what role can they play in helping ease the pressure?
Brenden Escott is joined by the CEO of Sport Edmonton Evan Daum for those answers, and to explore whether there’s untapped potential in our existing public spaces and what a sustainable path forward might actually look like for communities trying to keep up.
