This is the ninth and final week of our series looking at lives interrupted, people called by God or at times re-called by God. As we wrap up we turn to the book of Hebrews to consider not an individual, but a community of believers plagued by doubt, tempted to turn back to their old way of life rather than endure imminent persecution.

What makes a person special in God’s sight? What makes someone worthy of calling? This week we’ll look at the calling of someone with very little in the way of ambition… a veritable nobody whose story becomes one of the most compelling in the history of the world. Join us as we discuss Mary the mother of Jesus and the calling of a “nobody.”

Some of the greatest figures in Christian history started out as openly antagonistic to the Christian position. This week we’ll be looking at the calling of one such “enemy” as a young man named Saul hears from God and all of human history pivots (Acts 9).

If you were able to watch a dialogue between one human and God, what human would you want to see conducting that interview? In the third chapter of John, Jesus has a clandestine meeting with one of the most brilliant and well-respected leaders of the Jewish people. The perfect person to interview this person claiming to be Messiah. What follows is the calling of an academic, an elaborate tapestry of mysteries hidden and revealed, and an invitation beyond this academic: a calling for the audience that is listening in!

When Jesus was asked to perform miracles (signs), he stated that no sign would be given to such a generation except the sign of Jonah. But what is the sign of Jonah? If you’ve ever said “no” to God, if you’ve ever failed to do what God said, if you’ve ever been bitter that God’s mercy is being extended to those you think deserve God’s wrath: well, this is a calling you need to hear.

Fear is powerful. And the most powerful fear is the one that dominates your thinking and behavior. Fear might lead to cowardice, or ironically it can lead to bravery. This week we’ll examine God’s calling of a coward, and the ironic solution to cowardice: the right kind of fear.

Ever found yourself in a group or situation where you were hiding and longing to be seen at the same time? An outcast, out of place and without hope of connection? How many of our biggest failures and regrets were done in the name of belonging, of fitting in, of being affirmed and recognized, of finally being seen? Join us as we consider who Jesus interrupts the lives of those on the fringe of society.

For many people the whole purpose of life is to remain as comfortable and safe as you can be for the whole of your existence. Letting Jesus into your life will mess with your ambitions of comfort. Join us as we learn this truth from some first-century fishermen who changed the world.
