Dermatologist by day, fashion CEO by night, drinking six cups of chai a day through it all- we bring you Dr. Erum Ilyas!
This week’s episode with Dr Ilyas we go deep into the “fabric of reality” of the field of Dermatology. From how the field’s bread and butter has changed over time, to topics as niche as the pros and cons of telemedicine within the field, we’re serious when we say we go through it all.
More than that though, Dr Ilyas recounts how she started her clothing line @ambernoonstyle , where she weaves together medical expertise with a passion for textiles to create stylish versatility while being sun aware. Putting together medicine and fashion makes for a whole mix and match of topics discussed in between like fashion sustainability, sun protective clothing, and patient education.
We can not thank Dr Ilyas enough for her time and we are genuinely excited to bring this episode to you all! Tune in this Friday morning to hear all about how the business aspect of clinical practice did (or didn’t) carry over to the infrastructure of a clothing line for Dr Ilyas!!

An injury ridden tenure as a student basketballer first forced Dr. Gianakos to find the bright side to a sticky situation. Since then, she hasn’t stopped turning negatives into positives. Whether it was serving as research chief at her residency program, co-founding SpeakUpOrtho, or helping shape In-Office Needle Arthroscopy early in its lifetime, Dr. Gianakos has found a way to enrich any space she’s a part of.
We’ve recently been interviewing more and more medical students in the middle of research years. In our opinion, this episode puts many of our prior episodes on research years into perspective. As someone who took her own research year in med school and now guides medical students in her capacity as a faculty member, Dr. Gianakos is in a great position to speak on making the most of research experiences. In our interview she details the simple, clear, and urgent steps one should take at the beginning and end of any research project.
Whether you’re wondering if you’re cut out for a field, you’ve recently been doubting yourself, or you want to learn how to turn around setbacks, this episode is for you. Dr Gianakos’ words are distinctly motivational and we’re so so thankful to her for spending her time with us. In doing so, she helped us record what may just be the extremely informative pick me up you need this weekend.
Featuring the D.O. Or Do Not Podcast’s very own Dr Ian Storch, we present this season’s fourth episode- “There is No Try” releasing this Friday morning!
From a first gen college student studying English at Binghamton, to an ambassador of osteopathic medicine seeing a full schedule of patients at his gastroenterology practice while managing his podcast. The story of Dr Storch’s in between belongs in a book. The highlights of his early days include deciding to be a doctor after watching an EMT friend in action, basing his med school list off of a book he found on a shelf, and writing a poem as his personal statement, just to name a few. If that’s not a must listen story…. I don’t know what is
We were really just trying to match the name of this episode to Dr Storch’s podcast title. Ironically though, “There is No Try” fits the theme of the anecdotal lessons Dr Storch shares with us. Going far beyond board scores and research, he shares with us behind the scenes details and tribulations of his journey from residency to his gastroenterology fellowship. Tune in this Friday morning to hear Dr Storch highlight some of the less talked about challenges of completing one’s medical training.
This episode we discuss, with examples, how Michael has gotten hundreds of premeds into med school. A MUST LISTEN for anyone 2-3 years out from applying.
Incoming Anesthesiology resident, current MS4 at UCLA, Michael is on a mission to democratize quality premed advising. Whether it’s his work as President of the Premed Catalyst organization, his amazing email blog “Meditating on Medical School”, or his online materials like “Mike’s Office Hours”, Michael Minh Le is an absolute RESOURCE for the premed community. Why should you listen to this episode? We’ll let Mike do the talking “…. Any premed advice you’ve paid for, I want to make resources so good and make them free so that our free stuff is better than everyone else’s paid stuff. That’s my benchmark for releasing materials into the world…”.
In this episode we go through ALL of these materials, in so much detail. Michael’s resources are invaluable to every premed out there. If you’re not at least using what he’s put out there for free, you’re doing yourself a disservice. So take your first step, by tuning in to this episode
Orthopedic surgeon at the Rothman Institute, President of the Rothman Opioid Foundation, and recently appointed Associate Dean of Clinical Research at the Drexel School of Medicine- Dr. Ilyas does it all.
A career in medicine can take on so many shapes and forms. For Dr Ilyas that meant molding his work around passions like surgery, improving surgical processes, and training the next generation of physicians. In this week’s episode, we discuss with Dr Ilyas why he chose his field, what he’s hoped to achieve through his non-profit research organization, and how he plans to further develop clinical research proficiency at the Drexel College of Medicine.
This episode is essentially a short but detailed set of blueprints to Dr Ilyas’s medical journey. Tune in to get a sense of what it’s like working in his field, as well as to learn how he’s tailored his professional life to his core interests. Trust us, you’d be hard pressed to find many other ways to get such a comprehensive look into the field of Ortho in just 50 minutes! (Major props to Dr Ilyas for that)

Back with another episode for all you future doctors out there!!! Joining in for Episode 5 of the Third season of Chai With The Premed Guys is the one and only @lilyinmedicine
This week we have our chai time with Manan Parekh- Medical student at Temple University, artist, and content creator as @mananparekh611 on TikTok. Currently taking a research year to resolve his conflicting interests in Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology, Manan is in a special mental space that requires much introspection and reflection. Join us as we take full advantage of this and pick Manan's brain thoroughly. Other than his fields of interest, Manan walks us through his thoughts on different learning methods, his undergrad life as a basketball officiating frat brother, and how it's the intangible lessons one is taught by life that most measurably impact how one practices medicine.

Joining us this week is Shaun Anderson- part acrobat, part Youtuber, part medical student from Nevada, Las Vegas! This one’s for all the premeds that give up their nonmedical hobbies to spend more time on classes and activities that will make them “appealing” to med schools. Sayeed has been there, I’ve been there, we hope after listening to this episode you won’t get stuck there. Don’t ditch your idea for a cooking social media page just because you’re premed. Don’t ditch your love for painting just because you’re premed. Don’t drop out of your awesome dance team just because you’re premed.
Regardless of whether they’re medically related, your passions are what you should be spending your time on. More so than working some job in a hospital that you find boring because some reddit forum said you need 1000+ hours of clinical experience to get into med school. Paying less heed to these standards set for premeds makes you stand out more, makes you more successful as a student, and most importantly makes this a happier part of your life. Testament to this is Shaun’s experience devoting himself fully to acrobatics as a college student. And it’s that devotion, rather than any of the usual accolades premeds chase, that got him into med school. Join us for a continuation of this conversation and discussion on topics such as switching from Pre-PT to Pre-Med, being an efficient student researcher, and having a well-rounded life in med school.
