Mean the Routine

Change is Hard. So is Staying the Same.

Listen Later

Change is a perceived threat: loss of relaxation, loss of comfort, loss of money, loss of time, etc. Additionally, we get easily distracted with so much sensory input every minute of every day. Finally, there are so many things we need to do (or think we need to do) every day. It's hard to keep it all straight. Businesses have mottos or slogans for a reason. It helps them connect their values to your emotionality so you will remember them when it's time to buy. McDonalds: I’m lovin it. Nike: Just do it. Burger King: Have it your way. Subway: Eat fresh. Redbull: Redbull gives you wings. In a world that makes it so hard to remember everything, connecting emotion to a particular brand makes it easier for us to remember them. In the same way, when we connect our fear of change or excitement of change to the change itself, we are either less or more likely to engage in the change respectively. Routines are built on consistency. Consistency is easier when we enjoy the action we're taking. In this way our goals are met over time; never immediately like we would like. This episode will provide more insight into connecting emotion with the habit so you an stick with the new habit until it becomes a fun thing to do.
