Ryan Guina served 6.5 years in the USAF as an aircraft mechanic. Ryan now runs a website called The Military Wallet is a personal finance website for military members, veterans, and their families. His goal is to help the military community better manage money and understand the variety of programs and benefits available to them. Ryan also runs the personal finance website, Cash Money Life. Although Ryan is not a finance professional and no longer serves on Active Duty, the military will always be near and dear to his heart. Ryan shares with us his journey from his military service in the United States Air Force to becoming an internet blogger, podcaster, and personal finance connoisseur.  Ryan creates personal finance-related content that services currently serving the military including Active Duty, Reserves, and National Guard, as well as veterans/retirees and their family members.

You will learn through Ryan’s experience how difficult it is to scale yourself in an online business model. Many are turning towards online businesses as a way to supplement or even replace their traditional brick and mortar income-generating jobs in hopes to make more money, or at least the same amount of money faster.

Ryan shares with us his online business model and the fact that it is anything but quick. Online business is a viable option for those interested in entrepreneurship, but it does take a considerable amount of work and time to be successful!

This is the second part in a 4-part series dedicated to the Transitioning Veteran. This week Bennett and I sit down and discuss some false expectations Veterans often face, and how you can manage those expectations. Separating from the military is difficult enough but now throw all kinds of false hopes and dreams on that fire and before you know it your spirit is shot and things start to look really bleak!

Giving up your identity and perceived value in the military to take on being a single father wasn’t an easy decision at first for Adam. Once this Hour of Decision came he knew he had one chance to make the right decision and that was to be the Father to his son he knew he needed to be.

Once the decision was made Adam realized that his perceived value did not come from his uniform, or under his Sergeant Stripes, or draped under this nation’s flag with a commitment to his country sworn by an oath. His actual value was in raising a young boy into a worthy man someday. This legacy is where true value and honor is found.

What an accomplishment! Episode 50 was a Milestone Marker for me when I first started out. I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do, or how I was going to do it, but I wanted to give myself enough time to figure it out. Episode 50 was my stretch goal. On this week's episode, I have the pleasure of sitting down with my first military officer and my first Coast Guard member! Killing two birds with one stone on this one.

Travis Collier is an Instructional Designer, Military Transition Advisor. Active USCG Officer, and Graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy. Travis has a unique perspective in the realm of transitioning and preparing for this chapter that comes to all of us, whether we are ready for it or not!

Travis’ focus is on helping military members at 8-10 years of service implement an intent and strategy to transition out of the military and achieve even greater success on the outside, through his writing & live coaching.

Because Travis is still in he has leveraged this perspective and has written the exact game plan he is planning to undertake to transition out of the uniform in 18 months. This is what he has to say about his new book

“I wrote the game plan I wished I had eight years ago, even though I understand now I wasn’t ready to transition then. I’m still able to be the best military leader I can be, but also help members holistically define what service means to them as a profession. Not just a position”.

Travis is the author of two books, “Scale” and his new release “Command Your Transition“. He is currently an active duty O-4 in the US Coast Guard and setting his sights on his success outside the military.

Travis and I discuss the unique challenges facing anyone getting out of the military today and the steps one can take to prepare. When asked to provide three pieces of guidance for anyone facing transition he mentions these three elements:

Dedicated to currently serving military regardless of branch of service. This week Bennett and I discuss Preparing To Separate (again) and why it is so important to start this process sooner rather than later. There are a lot of things you can do to prepare for the day you get out. What Bennett and I talk about is not all-inclusive, but it will definitely get you going on the right track!

You are in control of your own successful transition/separation from the military. Granted there are several very useful programs i.e. TAPS Class that you can attend and take advantage of, but at the end of the day, you still have to implement the actions and information provided. No one is going to do it for you!!

Stay away from nay sayers, and folks with a generally negative view on things. Your evolution out of the military is going to be difficult enough as it is, you don’t need to add to the difficulty by being around folks that are less than positive or supportive!
