Breaking up is hard to do. It's even harder to do in Purity Culture if you've experienced any degree of physical intimacy with your partner. This leads people to remain in unhealthy and even abusive relationships because of deeply programmed guilt and shame. Esther Cho is a singer/songwriter and dear friend of Priska. She was gracious enough to enter the Horny Chapel and talk about a past relationship that lasted longer than it should have because of purity culture. Esther's beautiful songs can be heard throughout the episode and you listen to her EP here.

We were weeping and gnashing our teeth after the election, so we decided to record a joint episode to process the grief, rage, constipation, etc. I was on vacation in Minneapolis, so I had my earbuds. Sorry for my bad audio. But if you're looking for a conversation about what this election means, enjoy this 2-hour special episode.
Donavon Delisle grew up in a nightmarish household of bizarre christianity and an abusive father who controlled everything. As awful as Donavon's story is, it falls within the "normal" area of christian households for the simple fact that it was patriarchal. Sexual, physical, and emotional abuse may have been factors in the house, but these were all under the umbrella of patriarchal normalcy. If it's acknowledged at all, it's forgiven and even sanctioned. Because the bible says so. That settles it.
But Donavon found love and friendship outside of religion and clawed his way out. He is now a podcaster who used to co-host the Excommunication Station and currently hosts the No One Answered podcast focusing on abuse survivors and Jesus Stole Our Movies, which needs no explanation.

Tori Williams Douglass is back on Chapel Probation to talk about her homeschooling experience, which was more home indoctrination into fundamentalist chrsitianity than home education. But she asked questions and sought answers, which is a recipe for disaster in that world. We also talk about Content Warning and how it can help us heal from our educational and church pasts.
Be sure to check out Tori's podcast, White Homework and Go Home Bible, You're Drunk with co-host Justin Gentry.

Priska and Scott get spicy...well, as spicy as possible within the confines of purity culture...as they talk about their sexual awakenings. Even inside purity culture, curiosity and desire got stimulated, giving them a glimpse into sexual possibilities. From pop culture, movies, music, to their friends, sex and sexuality was on their minds, whether they wanted it to be or not. And as embarrassing or cringey as some of the stories are, Priska and Scott have learned to be gentle with their former selves as they navigated their way out. Hell, they're still navigating.

One could argue that most christian churches and organizations are "culty" or even proper cults. No argument necessary for the bizarre churches Uriah Wesman grew up in. With their ritual chanting, leaders choosing mates to have lots of children, and ridiculous levels of control over every aspect on one's life, yep. Cults. The very definition. But even as a kid, Uriah was brave enough to envision a life outside with love and joy and laughter. He used his sense of humor to make sense of things and became a comedian and storyteller with a one-man show that has already had 3 sold-out performances. You can see the next show at the Lyric Hyperion on Thursday, October 24. Get tickets here.
"Julie," (not her real name) has been listening to Chapel Probation for a while and came to a SoCal ExVangelical hang at my house a few months ago. She told me about her time teaching at a well-known Christian school in the area, and I was struck by how similar our stories were. Like me, the whole experience contributed greatly to her deconstruction, forcing her to choose her humanity over the bigotry embedded in evangelical culture, particularly against LGBTQIA people. Julie tells her story of how she got into and out of this culture and how she has been able maintain a relationship with her parents, especially her mom, who is a pastor.

One of the new hosts in the Dauntless Media Collective, Maggie Harrigan is a graduate of Gordon College who came onto Chapel Probation to talk about her experiences there and her life since. She found some good professors and even better friends while at Gordon who helped her to deconstruct her fundamentalist beliefs and forge a new worldview based on truth and love. Today, Maggie hosts the Hello Deconstructionists podcast where she talks with a diverse collection of guests about their lives outside of their former evangelical upbringings.

Long before most of us were a glint in the eye of today's deconstruction world, Blake Chastain created the Exvangelical hashtag and Facebook group, giving the world the title and the framework for the good, bad, and the ugly of all things related to deconstruction. He also started the Irreverent Media Group bringing together so many great podcasts like the Dirty Rotten Church Kids, Straight White American Jesus, Go Home Bible, You're Drunk, God Has Not Given, Speaking in Church, and of course, the mothership: Exvangelical. These podcasts, that Facebook group, and the hashtag were the bedrock of the deconstruction world. Since then, as you'll hear me rant about, many more voices have entered the fray, some of them great, some of them...not so great. But however you feel about White former pastors with tattoos taking up too much space, Blake has written an incredible book, Exvangelical and Beyond, giving the history of both evangelicalism and our current movement away from it. Compared to some insipid influencers just telling you that racism and homophobia are bad, Blake's book is an actual pillar of information and truth.
