Part 2 of “Wicked” is out this week – so what’s a Wicked-themed date night? Aaron and Brad both recommend different approaches to defying gravity – though Aaron insists Brad’s suggestion has more to do with embracing gravity than defying it. (Also: Aaron recommends a wicca-themed Durham bar, and Brad takes ‘wicked’ in a Bostonian direction.)

We never actually get to today’s trend: Victor starts to set up a trending article by expressing his dislike of autograph collection (specifically, buying autographed items without having had the experience of interacting with the signer directly), but Aaron jumps in with a counterpoint related to modern abstract-expressionistic art. (It makes sense, trust me.) Also, Victor loses a friend.
Want to know what folks are talking about on social media? PlayMakers Repertory Company is back on stage this week with the classic comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” open through Sunday, December 7. It’s a play that dates back to the 1930s, but its themes remain salient and relevant even today – despite (or because of) the wackiness of some of its characters.
Aaron chats with Ray Anthony Thomas, who’s in the cast as family patriarch Martin Vanderhoff.

All eyes this week are on federal immigration authorities, who have been conducting enforcement operations in the Triangle. That has sparked a major backlash from local residents and town and county officials – and even local law enforcement: Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood issued a joint statement this week with the Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough police chiefs, urging residents to know their rights and reiterating their own commitment to “protect and serve all community members,” particularly the most vulnerable.
Sheriff Blackwood joins Aaron to discuss the situation, how his office is handling it, the conversations he’s had with residents, and what everyone can do to preserve our community as one that’s both welcoming and safe for everyone.

Kent Nickerson of the band Brother Kent stopped by Live & Local last week, following the release of the band’s new album “Fancy Stuff.”
Visit BrotherKent.com.
“It took almost a year,” Nickerson says of the album. “I think it was the 28th, last November, when we recorded the initial tracks. (But) I wasn’t really happy with my performance. So through the spring I went back into the studio: we did the recording down at Hondo Creek with Mike Nicholson, and I went back a couple times to work on stuff. (And) I decided I wanted a friend of mine from New York, Karen Dahlstrom, who’s a great singer-songwriter, to add some harmonies. So it was a process.”
The finished product is the band’s second full-length album, their first since 2023’s “What They Say Ain’t True.” The title may be “Fancy Stuff,” but the songs themselves are straight down the line, with Nickerson’s signature twang driving an Americana sound that Brother Kent accurately self-describes as “equal parts The National and The Band.”
“I just walk around and make up songs,” Nickerson modestly says of his writing process. “I do work a lot harder now on finishing them and editing, I think I’ve gotten a lot better at that.”
If you want to catch Brother Kent live, they’re playing at Yonder in Hillsborough at 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 21.
