Valley West was the first, and only, blues club in Tarzana, California.  Seeking to be "normal", Jody goes to interview for a cocktail waitress job there.   Richard Pryor has spoken openly about his mother being a prostitute in his grandmother's brothel.  This family of generational pimps had to launder their money somewhere, and the club was a perfect front for their prostitution and drug racket.  This is when the "family" set their sites on turning Jody out alright, but not as a prostitute.  They wanted her to be a madam.   Welcome to the club.
