Despite his intentions to be thoughtful for Mrs. Peter, Peter's inherent heedlessness prevails. While his carelessness was harmless when alone, it now puts Mrs. Peter at risk. Although initially content in the Old Briar-patch, Peter's old habits lead him to wander.

One day, engrossed in planning a surprise for Mrs. Peter, he heedlessly almost runs into Old Man Coyote. The Coyote, considering their past "debt" paid, grins hungrily. Peter narrowly escapes into Jimmy Skunk's old house.

Notable Quotes:

  • "Heedlessness is just the twin of thoughtlessness, you know, And where you find them both at once, there trouble's sure to grow." – Peter Rabbit (epigraph)

Summary:

  • The re-emergence of Peter's defining flaw: his heedlessness.
  • Old Man Coyote clarifies his pragmatic philosophy: "everybody watch out for himself" once a debt is paid.
  • The immediate, tangible consequence of Peter's lapse in judgment, leading to a narrow escape.
