Peter is relieved to have escaped Old Man Coyote, while Mrs. Peter, who witnessed his near-capture, is terrified. She bravely warns Peter by thumping the ground, signaling him to stay hidden. Old Man Coyote, frustrated by her vigilance, snarls and leaves.

Mrs. Peter then scolds Peter for his heedlessness. Peter, confused by Old Man Coyote's behavior, struggles to reconcile a "friend" trying to catch him. Mrs. Peter wisely explains that their debt is paid, making them "even," and suggests Peter must continuously do good turns for Old Man Coyote to ensure he always remains in Peter's debt, thereby securing his friendship.
