This next episode covers verse 5 and ends at verse 30 of chapter 18 of 2nd Samuel. We are given a clear picture of David’s growing success as an officer in the army. At the start, everyone in the military was pleased with him; by the end, his name was well known. 

You might wonder why it says this since he was the one that killed Goliath. Didn’t everyone know his name by then? Perhaps one reason is that he had not proven himself as a commander of a unit of men. As immense as the victory over Goliath was, David had been a mere lad. Was it an amazing one-off victory or could he lead a group of fighting men? This episode tells us that it is clear to everyone in the army that he could lead a large group of them into battle and crush the enemy…every time. But not everyone was happy!
