None of us is immune to finding solace in the wrong places, in the wrong habits. You may have also experienced the same, and it can happen when you are running on empty. It can show itself in anything from totally irrational or hasty decisions, completely losing your temper with someone, collapsing in an emotional heap, or simply running away. It’s when as a leader you’ve been burning too much midnight oil, taken one too many words of criticism, felt too heavily the expectations of self or others, taken on too much responsibility, not delegated effectively (or in some cases not at all), seen one too many people; done everything right but feel overcome by the pressure or are now facing some unexpected and tragic turn of events. It’s when you have reached the end of the line, when there’s nothing left in the tank. Just what do you do in such a place? At the bottom is a list of questions for reflection.
In this episode we consider more specifically the importance of not listening to our own thoughts but instead learning to speak to our own souls, speak to our souls about God, and speak to God.

1. What stood out for you as your read the biblical story?
2. Recall a time when you sense God supported you in the middle of an especially difficult time. How specifically did you find strength in God?
3. If you are an older mentor, share with those who are younger one story of someone you know (it might be yourself) who kept going during a difficult event or season. How did you lean on God? What did God do?
4. What do you think about this idea of learning not to listen to yourself, but instead talking to yourself, talking to yourself about God, and talking to God. Share your thoughts with others in the group if you’re in one.
5. What specific, practical steps are you going to take to put this into practice whenever you start to listen to your own thoughts?
6. Consider Christ and how he emptied himself for you and me. Ponder him. It’s the best strengthening agent there is !
