This news generated a public conversation that included Pope Leo XIV, who called for humane treatment of migrants.  Both Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden announced that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operation in the city had ended as of Thursday, November 20, 2025. Mayor Lyles expressed relief, stating the operation was an "intrusion" that had caused fear and disruption in the community, including business closures.
