Charlotte says Border Patrol sweep is over, DHS says no. Pope Leo weighs in.

Local officials in Charlotte, North Carolina, announced that the recent Border Patrol operation had concluded, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) insisted that enforcement continues in the area. This news generated a public conversation that included Pope Leo XIV, who called for humane treatment of migrants.  Both Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden announced that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operation in the city had ended as of Thursday, November 20, 2025. Mayor Lyles expressed relief, stating the operation was an "intrusion" that had caused fear and disruption in the community, including business closures.
