In Part One of Lance Corporal Lyndon Walker’s journey, we trace his beginnings in Humboldt County—aka The Lost Coast.
Walker opens up about growing up in a small town in Northern California and the culture shock he felt when he reported to his first duty station.

He walks us through MCRD, MEPS, PA School, and finally reporting to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion at Camp San Mateo in the 62 Area (Camp Pendleton).

In the final installment of Gunnery Sergeant Moon’s story, we explore the quieter, heavier aftermath of combat—and the unshakable call to lead. Gunny shares what the “decompression period” really looked like for him. He opens up about the emotional toll of war—PTSD triggers—and the lack of mental health resources available at the time.

After completing his second enlistment, Moon transitioned into the Reserves and became a MCMAP instructor, stepping fully into the role of mentor and motivator. He reflects on the leadership philosophies that shaped him, including never asking his Marines to do anything he wouldn’t do himself. He also speaks candidly about the toughest parts of leadership—challenging superiors respectfully and carrying the grief of losing those under his watch.

Post-military life brought its own challenges: the absence of the brotherhood, rebuilding a support system, and learning how to cope with PTSD through therapy. He shares how becoming a father again and entering a second marriage gave him renewed purpose. Today, Moon continues his service in a different way through his involvement with projectk9hero.org, helping retired military and police K9s transition to peaceful lives beyond service.
