Rabat - A total of 146 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) and 351 recoveries have been recorded in Morocco over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection said Thursday.

In its daily briefing on the pandemic, the Ministry noted that the number of people who have received their first Covid-19 vaccine reached 24,456,314 and those who got two jabs amounted to 22,759,148, while 1,934,837 people received their booster shot.

The total number of COVID-19 cases reported since the start of the outbreak of the virus stands at 951,092, while recoveries rise to 934,009, i.e. a recovery rate of 98.2%.

The new COVID-19 cases were reported in the regions of Casablanca-Settat (64), Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (54), Marrakech-Safi (12), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (10), Eastern Region (3), Souss-Massa (2) and Beni Mellal-Khenifra (1).

The total number of deaths rose to 14,794 (case-fatality 1.6%) with 2 new confirmed deaths in the region of Rabat-Salé-Kenitra.

The number of active cases stands at 2,289, including 102 people in a critical or severe condition.

The Moroccan Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb announced that the government is studying possible solutions to repatriate Moroccans stranded abroad, following the government’s decision to close air and maritime borders for two weeks, amid the new Omicron variant.

Morocco decides to extend the suspension of direct flights for passengers, to and from the kingdom to a later date, reported MAP.

The Moroccan authorities had decided to suspend direct flights for a period of two weeks, starting last Monday, November 29, at eleven at night and 59 minutes, due to the emergence of Covid-19 new variant Omicron in Europe and Africa.

“This decision also falls within the framework of the measures taken to preserve the gains that Morocco has accumulated in managing the Covid-19 pandemic and protecting the health of citizens,” said the official extension statement.

Nicaragua has become the latest country to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of China.

Taiwan said it was "deeply saddened", adding that Nicaragua had "disregarded [their] many years of friendship".

The decision was widely praised by China, who demands that any country that wants diplomatic relations with it must cut existing ties with Taipei.

It comes as the US State Department on Friday called for democracies to "expand engagement with Taiwan".

Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province to be reunified with the mainland one day. However, Taiwan sees itself as a democratically-governed, independent country, though it has never formally declared independence from the mainland.

Taiwan's list of international allies has dwindled from 21 down to 14 since President Tsai Ing-wen took office in May 2016.

"Nicaragua today breaks diplomatic relations with Taiwan and ceases to have any contact or official relationship," said Nicaragua's foreign ministry, adding that it "recognises that there is only one single China".

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying praised Nicaragua's decision, calling it the "right choice ... in line with the global trend" adding that it "has people's support".
