Reuven, Gad and half of Menashe are thanked for keeping their promise to Moshe (to fight with their brethren until everyone had received his inheritance) and they are sent home to the Transjordan (non-Eretz Yisrael proper side of the Yarden).
The two and a half tribes are blessed with extra wealth.
Upon their return to their side of the land, a giant altar is erected.
The rest of Klal Yisrael gets alarmed and send a delegation led by Pinchas HaKohen to confront the two and a half tribes about this.
It's clarified that the altar was not meant for korbanos or as a rebellion but rather it was to be a monument symbolizing the nation's unity for future generations.
The rest of Klal Yisrael accept this explanation and harmony is restored.

● What is a "Migrash" and why is it so essential to the Levitic cities?
● What do the Levitic cities have to do with us?

● Klal Yisrael is commanded to set up Arei Miklat (Cities of Refuge).
● The Navi reviews the halachos of Arei Miklat: A person who kills another unintentionally must run to a City of Refuge, which serves the role of a secure home base where the unintentional murderer is protected from the "avenger of blood" (Goel HaDam) and is required to stay there until the death of the Kohen Gadol.
● 6 Cities of Refuge are listed: 3 in Eretz Yisrael, 3 on the other side of the Yarden.

A second lottery is drawn for the rest of the tribes.
The tribes of Shimon, Zevulun, Yissachar, Asher, Naftali, and Dan receive their heritages in Eretz Yisrael.
The people give Yehoshua the land he requests.
The division of all of the heritages of Klal Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael is now complete.
For those who are more visual learners, the green area is on the other side of the Jordan River which was conquered by Moshe. The blue area is what we have seen apportioned so far in chapters 15-18. The land of the remaining six tribes, the red area, is apportioned in today's perek:

- This Navi lists the lineage and inheritance of Menashe and the Bnos Tzelafchad ask Yehoshua and Elazar HaKohen for their inheritance, as promised to them by Moshe, and it is granted to them.
- The inheritance of Ephraim is listed and the Bnei Yosef appeal that they want more land because of their large population so Yehoshua recommends that they conquer a certain area in the territory occupied by Perizi and Refa'im.
- The Bnei Yosef decline because they argue that the land is insufficient and too mighty to conquer and Yehoshua encourages them to do their best.

*Perek Points*
● The portion for _B'nei Yosef_ is outlined, beginning from the Yarden near Yericho and stretching westward.
● The specific borders of Shevet Ephraim are detailed, marking cities and natural boundaries.
● Certain cities within the territory are designated for Ephraim, even when surrounded by Menasheh’s land.
● The boundaries emphasize how carefully Eretz Yisrael was divided among the shevatim.
● However, Ephraim does not drive out the Canaani inhabitants of Gezer.
● Instead, the Canaanim remain among them and become forced labor — an incomplete fulfillment of the mission to fully conquer the land.

● The division of Eretz Yisrael starts with the tribe of Yehudah.
● Caleiv is given Chevron.
● After driving out 3 giants, Caleiv announces that whoever conquers the land of Kiryas Sefer will get his daughter Achsah as a wife.
● Osniel ben Kenaz (his half-brother) conquers the land and receives Achsah as his wife.
● Achsah asks Caleiv for a better, more fertile piece of land. Caleiv consents.
● The Navi lists all of the boundaries/borders of the land for the tribe of Yehudah.
● The Yevusi are not driven out of the land.
---------------------
More questions than answers...
● What is the meaning of the cryptic passage about Caleiv, his daughter Achsah, and Osniel?
● Why does Achsach feel a need to maneuver her way towards fertile land? Who exactly asks for this land?
