    Send us Fan Mail

Discover a true hidden gem from the Aldi wine aisle – their Specially Selected Cote de Provence Rosé 2024 that delivers authentic French quality at a remarkable $10 price point. This isn't just another budget wine; it carries the prestigious AOP certification, confirming it meets the highest French standards for vineyard practices and production methods.

Diving into what makes this rosé special, we explore the significance of Cote de Provence – the largest appellation within the renowned Provence region. While specific grape varieties aren't disclosed, this bottle likely features the classic Provençal blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and potentially other traditional varieties. The 2024 vintage (harvested fall 2023) ensures maximum freshness, presenting a balanced array of subtle fruit flavors with refreshing acidity and characteristic restraint.

  • Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023
The Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023 is a wine I found for $10.99, and it received 92 points from a major wine critic.
    The Story
Ferrari-Carano was founded in 1981 by Don and Rhonda Carano. It is a beautiful estate in Northern Sonoma, and they produced consistently excellent wines. After Don Carano passed away a few years ago, the wine estate was purchased by Foley Family Wine and Spirits, who offer an outstanding line of wines and brands.
What is Fumé Blanc? It is a Bordeaux-style Sauvignon Blanc that is oak barrel-aged. The typical value of Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and aged in stainless steel vats. Oak barrels are often used in Bordeaux (but not always) for Bordeaux Blanc, which is Sauvignon Blanc blended with a smaller percentage of Semillon.
So, Fumé Blanc refers to oak barrel-aged Sauvignon, but that isn't universal. Fumé is French for smoky, and Blanc is white..
The Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023 is sourced from grapes farmed in Sonoma, as well as other North Coast AVAs. 2023 had a cool and long growing season, the final harvest was not until October 26.
This Sauvignon Blanc was both fermented and aged in either stainless steel vats (70%) or (30%) in older French oak barrels. Older barrels have little flavor to impart into the wine, but an oak barrel allows small amounts of oxygen to interact with the wine, while stainless steel is air-tight.
The Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023 was aged "sur lees," which indicates that the dead yeast and grape residue from the fermentation process remain with the wine. If the lees are stirred, the wine takes on a creamy texture. Here, the wine was stirred every other week for two months.
    The alcohol content is 13.9%.
The Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023 Tasting Notes
The color is sunshine yellow. The nose is tropical fruit, peach, lemon, apple, soft spice, and a floral halo. Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023 is a firm, well-structured wine with a pleasing flavor.
This Sauvignon Blanc tastes like a compote of tropical fruit, peach, pear, lime, and lemon. There is a light, creamy texture from the stirred lees, and a finish of nectarine and coconut milk.
The acidity is nicely managed, allowing the flavors and structure to fully unfold.
    The Summary
The Ferrari-Carano North Coast Fume Blanc 2023 is really good. If I had known, I would have tried it way before this.
Well-made and full of delicious flavor, this Sauvignon Blanc is a winner.

  • Ferrari Carano's Fumé Blanc: The Oak-Aged Sauvignon You've Been Missing

    Send us Fan Mail

What happens when traditional French winemaking techniques meet California innovation at a price point we can all afford? Pure magic in a glass. Ferrari Carano's North Coast Fumé Blanc 2023 represents the pinnacle of value white wine, scoring 92 points from top critics while remaining accessible at just $10.99.

Most casual wine enthusiasts don't realize that "Fumé Blanc" simply refers to oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc, a style that transforms the typically bright, zesty varietal into something with remarkable depth and complexity. The genius behind this particular bottle lies in its balanced approach – 70% fermented in crisp, clean stainless steel tanks while 30% enjoys time in neutral French oak barrels. The result? A wine that maintains refreshing fruit character while developing sophisticated texture.

The real secret weapon here is Ferrari Carano's traditional sur lie aging process, where the wine rests on spent yeast cells for three months with bi-weekly stirring. This patient technique creates an unexpected creaminess that blooms mid-palate, complementing the tropical fruit, peach, and subtle coconut notes. Unlike aggressively herbaceous New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs that can overwhelm, this expression remains smooth, lingering, and perfectly balanced – proof that exceptional winemaking doesn't require an exceptional price tag. Grab a bottle of this surprisingly sophisticated North Coast gem and discover what Domain Dave wishes he hadn't overlooked for so many years. Your taste buds (and wallet) will thank you!

  • Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023
The Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 is a $14.99 Trader Joe's exclusive. The back label says it was "Produced and Bottled by" Northwest Collective from Dundee, Oregon.
    The Story
The Northwest Collective is a part of Precept Brands, a large wine and spirits business in the Northwest part of the US. They have a family of brands with the most well known being Gruet Sparkling wines.
The Sunshine Mountain Vineyard is located near the town of Dalles in northeastern Oregon, near the border with Washington. The AVA here is part of the Columbia Valley AVA, most of which is located in Washington. The Columbia Gorge AVA is close by.
When you think of Oregon wine, you think of the Willamette Valley AVA, which is south of Portland. The Columbia Valley AVA of Oregon is 60 miles east of Portland.
The soil type in this growing region is volcanic, and the climate can range from almost rainforest to high desert. Trader Joe's notes that the vineyard receives 300 days of sun annually, positioning it closer to the desert.
Trader Joe's Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 is sourced from a single vineyard. It is a higher-altitude vineyard that overlooks the Columbia Valley. This region is more known for Cabernet Sauvignon than Pinot Noir.
One odd factor is that Sunshine Mountain Winery is located in San Marcos, which is in the hills of northern San Diego. While Sunshine Mountain Winery does not name any of their wine Sunshine Mountain, it is odd to have another wine using the same name.
Trader Joe's Fearless Flyer says this wine should sell in the $20 to $30 range (again, it is $14.99), which may be why it is selling at Trader Joe's so as not to compete with the other winery. That is me speculating.
    The alcohol content is 14.5%.
The Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 Tasting Notes
The color is a nearly see-through garnet red. The nose is herbs, black cherry, mushroom, cola, spice, and plum. The Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 is light to medium weight, long and sleek with a slap of spice on the finish.
This Pinot Noir tastes like black cherry, a shock of herbs, cooling plum, a little not-sweet Dr. Pepper, sharp spice, and strawberry. This is an interesting wine that slowly opens its flavor to you.
    The Summary
The Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 is an interesting wine well worth giving a try.
Value-priced Pinot Noir tends to taste familiar; this is something different.
This is a wine that has more in common with higher-priced Pinot Noir.

  • Oregon Columbia Valley Pinot Noir?@ Trader Joe's

    Send us Fan Mail

Discovering exceptional wine values is always exciting, especially when they come from unexpected places. The Sunshine Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 from the Columbia Valley of Oregon represents exactly this kind of delightful surprise - a $14.99 Trader Joe's exclusive that punches well above its weight class.

What makes this Pinot truly special is its origin story. Unlike the typical Oregon Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, this single-vineyard wine hails from about 60 miles east of Portland where the Columbia Valley extends into Oregon. This distinctive microclimate boasts volcanic soils and approximately 300 days of sunshine annually - dramatically different conditions than you'd expect in typically rainy western Oregon. These unique growing conditions contribute to a Pinot Noir with remarkable character and complexity.

The wine itself reveals classic translucent garnet coloration and that wonderfully funky, complex nose that Pinot enthusiasts crave. Unlike most value-priced Pinot Noir that aims for immediate approachability, Sunshine Mountain presents as more individual and complex. It starts somewhat tight, with sharp edges and spicy notes that might challenge your palate initially. But patience is rewarded - give it time to breathe, swirl your glass, and watch as beautiful fruit flavors emerge to balance those initial sharp notes. This evolution in the glass, typically found only in more expensive bottles, transforms it into something truly special.

Produced by Precept Wine Company (through their Northwest Collective subsidiary), the largest independent wine producer in the Northwest, this bottle delivers what Trader Joe's suggests would normally compete with wines in the $20-30 range. Whether you're a casual wine drinker or a dedicated Pinot enthusiast, this bottle offers an opportunity to experience a distinctive expression of Oregon terroir at a fraction of the expected price. Give it the time it deserves to open up, and you'll discover why single-vineyard Pinot Noir from unique growing regions creates such passionate devotees.

  • J L Quinson Le Rosé French Fizz
The J L Quinson Le Rosé French Fizz sells for $7.99 at Trader Joe's. The brand is J.L. Quinson, a wine company located in the south of France since 1904.
    The Story
J L Quinson produces a wide range of wines, from Chablis to Provence Rosé and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it appears they no longer have a website. I wonder if they are still an independent winery or a brand of another company.
The J L Quinson Le Rosé French Fizz is designated as a Wine of France, meaning the grapes were sourced from than one growing region. French wine is typically about pride of place; these wines from multiple regions are more likely to be made for export.
Trader Joe's says that the grapes used were a blend of Red grapes typically found in the south of France. Many of these grape varietals are rare for California wine, so this should be a unique and interesting blend.
The bottle has an old-school soda bottle cap, but it comes with a snap enclosure to keep the fizz in between sips.
The Fizz in the name means that this is a Frizzante Bubbly. A full-on Bubbly may have 6 bars of pressure in the bottle, which is way they have a cork and a cage to keep the cork in position despite the pressure.
A Fizz or Frizzante Bubbly has 1 1/2 or 2 bars of pressure, so a soda pop top works since the pressure is closer to a carbonated soft drink than Champagne.
    The alcohol content is 10.5%.
The J L Quinson Le Rosé French Fizz Tasting Notes
The color is Barbie pink with a hint of orange. The nose is dried strawberry, a little minerality, tangerine, soft spice, and lightly floral. J L Quinson Le Rosé French Fizz is a dry Bubbly with tight, sleek flavor.
This Rosé tastes like pink lemonade, strawberry (not sweet), soft spice, and nectarine.
    The acidity is well-balanced.
    The Summary
The J L Quinson Le Rosé French Fizz is a far more elegant Bubbly than I was expecting.
This is not a complicated wine, but what is in the glass delivers.
An excellent summer sipper, give it a good chill.

    The Story

Other than the general vineyard's location and a mention of French oak, we are given little information about this Cab Sauv. Not the worst thing since tasting should tell us what we need to know.
    The alcohol content is 14.5%.
The Kirkland Signature Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 Tasting Notes

The Kirkland Signature Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 from Costco breaks all the rules of wine pricing, offering genuine Sonoma County quality at a jaw-dropping $6.99.

What makes this bottle truly special is its refusal to compromise on classic Cabernet character despite its budget price. The flavor profile dazzles with blackberry, raspberry, plum, and cranberry notes, enhanced by subtle herbs, spice, and a touch of licorice that adds remarkable depth. Perhaps most surprisingly, it features French oak influence rather than the cheaper American oak typically found at this price point, delivering more refined, spicy complexity.
