Get up stand up, stand up for your rights. Don't give up the fight. This song has been sung across the world since 1973. In every place that knows oppression it becomes the song of that place. The man who wrote it was Bob Marley, who died at thirty-six, and in those thirty-six years made the world hear reggae. Born in 1945 in rural Jamaica, his father a white government official and his mother a young Black Jamaican woman, his identity placed him from childhood in a crack between worlds where he didn't fully belong on either side. He grew up in the Trenchtown neighborhood in Kingston, where he found reggae. That music has a rhythm that moves the body, speaks of the anger and longing of those at the very bottom, and carries the spiritual grounding of the Rastafari faith. His music crossed language, culture, and geography to become the shared voice of the oppressed worldwide. Before he died he said: money can't buy life.
