He is the defining voice of Chinas Misty Poetry movement. The lines Baseness is the passport of the base, nobility is the epitaph of the noble shook an entire generation to its core. His name is Bei Dao, born Zhao Zhenkai in Beijing in 1949. During the Cultural Revolution, he began writing poems as an act of private necessity, passing them hand to hand in secret manuscripts. In 1978, he co-founded the groundbreaking unofficial literary journal Today, helping launch the Misty Poetry movement that would transform Chinese literature. After 1989, Bei Dao went into exile, wandering through Germany, Sweden, the United States, and Hong Kong for over three decades, never returning to his homeland, but never stopping his writing in Chinese either. He has said that language is the last root of the exiled. His collections have been translated into dozens of languages, and he has been nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In this episode of Thinker J, Jenny takes you inside Bei Daos extraordinary life, into the era when poetry could make a government afraid, and into the quiet, enduring refusal that has defined his existence.
