A Hero with Success
Can we say that whether a person can be deemed a hero or a loser is merely on the basis of the success or failure of his endeavors?
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” Heroism is the consistent social construct that all may interpret it that it should be successful. However, perhaps, the definition of a hero comes not from the virtues of man, but the flaws. While, in our society, heroes today are often seen as perfect individuals. Someone who is heroic often has the ability to act on his dreams and follow his commitments. Simply put, a hero always takes perseverance and tenacity (韌性) in order to reach for his dreams and achieve his goals. A hero must also have the good sense and intelligence to be able to overcome his own imperfections or weaknesses. In fact, there are many people who may not have found success, even after continuous failures and heartbreaks, but their desires to be the best is what makes them real heroes! In other words, success is often attributed to preparation, luck, hard work, and even the abundance of lots of failures.
Steve Jobs is a good example to be the hero with failures. He was a beginner having achieved everything, but fired from his own company at last. He was a college dropout who did a course on calligraphy, and used this skill to build Macintosh a decade later. But at that time of 30, he had no job. He lost the school learning and his company. The truth is that he didn’t lose hope, and continued to live life by the day even after getting diagnosed with a deadly pancreatic cancer (胰臟癌). He is the real hero. Every time when we celebrate success, we all talk of the good things we did. On the contrary, the fact is that all the things that we messed up (搞亂), ultimately, lead to our success. By listening to / observing / hearing to stories of people who failed miserably, had the tenacity to emerge from their failures, and the perseverance to make it bigger, we know that they are the real life heroes. Therefore, we should be proud to say that we did fail, but that leads us to the so called success!
