Whether you grew up hearing Bible stories in Sunday School or you're exploring Scripture for the first time, it can be easy to see the Bible as a disjointed collection of tales, poems, genealogies, letters and prophecies. But what if I told you the Bible tells one complex, interconnected story from beginning to end - a story that makes sense of our existence and points towards a glorious future?
In this series, we're going to walk through that story by looking at 16 key Bible verses. These verses, taken together, provide a summary of the Bible's central narrative that will help us better understand God's unfolding plan to redeem humanity and all of creation. We'll see how the Bible's account perfectly sets the stage for Jesus to resolve humanity's deepest problems in a surprising yet supremely satisfying way.
Let's begin at the very start, in Genesis chapter 1.
Part 1: God Creates the World
"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the sixth day." Genesis 1:31
Right from verse 1, we're introduced to God as the main character in the story - the eternal, supremely powerful Being who created the entire universe simply by speaking it into existence. Over 6 days, God systematically fills previously empty and formless darkness with light, sky, land, plants, sun and stars, living creatures and, finally, the first man and woman.
At each stage, God pauses to evaluate His handiwork and deems it "good." When the whole dazzling array is complete, He declares all of it together to be "very good" - it perfectly accomplishes His creative purpose. The world and everything in it exists exactly as God intends for it to exist. All of creation joyfully fulfills its purpose in harmony with and under the authority of its benevolent Maker.
This opening scene reveals some crucial truths about God, humanity and the world that will shape the rest of the Bible story:
- God created the entire universe and sovereignly rules over all of it. Nothing exists apart from His creative power.
- God declared His finished creation to be perfect according to His standards. There is no flaw or defect in the original state of the world.
- Humans have a uniquely special status and role within creation. We alone are made in God's image and commissioned to govern the rest of the world under Him.
The stage is now perfectly set for humans to live joyfully in God's presence, obeying His wise and loving leadership for our benefit and His glory. But as we'll see next time, things are about to take a tragic turn...
Reflection Questions:
1. How does the opening chapter of the Bible introduce God's identity and role in the story? What surprised or stood out to you?
2. What was God's evaluation of the original state of the completed creation in Genesis 1? What implications does this have for the world we experience today?
3. What do you think the responsibilities and joys of bearing God's image might have looked like for the first humans? What do you think this means for followers of God today?
The opening lines of Scripture provide the critical backdrop for everything that follows in the biblical narrative. My prayer is that you're beginning to catch a vision for the Bible's integral, compelling story that centers on the reality of and relationship with our wise, creative and powerful Creator. I'm excited to continue tracing this story with you in the weeks ahead!
