Long before Star Trek asked humanity to “seek out new life and new civilizations,” the BBC was quietly producing thoughtful science fiction that challenged our deepest assumptions about progress.

In The Burning of the Grass, first broadcast on BBC Radio’s Saturday Night Theatre in 1970, an Earth survey ship arrives on a distant world expecting to discover a primitive agricultural society ready to embrace technology and industry.

Instead, the explorers encounter something they never imagined.

The people of Centauri IV live peacefully among abandoned modern cities. They possess little machinery, no governments, no armies—and no desire to recover the civilization they deliberately left behind.

As Earth’s representatives offer factories, mining, spaceflight, and scientific progress, their hosts politely decline. The result is not an action adventure, but one of radio drama’s most compelling explorations of civilization, conscience, nuclear war, environmental stewardship, and what it truly means to be “advanced.”

Thoughtful, moving, and surprisingly relevant more than fifty years after its original broadcast, The Burning of the Grass deserves to be remembered alongside the finest classic science fiction of the twentieth century.
