Here’s the truth. To watch footage of Fred Hampton — the Illinois Black Panther Party chairman slain by the twin forces of the FBI and Chicago Police Department in the twilight of 1969, at a mere 21 years old — is to be pulled in by a magnetism as expansive as his radical politics. Whether making speeches or debating with other organizers, Hampton blended an earthen intimacy with the patter of a Baptist preacher. His approach to community organizing was bold, undergirded by a belief in the power and need of cross-racial, cross-cultural solidarity. He was intelligent, able to imagine a necessary socialist future. It’s for this reason that he was a threat to the white-dominated, racist, imperialist power structures that govern this country.

Dozens of deaths have been tied to this week's storm, but experts say the death toll is likely far larger. As snow blanketed much of Texas on Sunday, an 11-year-old boy in the Houston area gleefully played outside. Less than 24 hours later, as temperatures plunged to near single digits and homes across the state lost power, the boy died. Early that same morning, a San Antonio man left his house for a dialysis appointment — but he never arrived. His wife found him unresponsive nearly two hours later in the frigid weather. Local authorities said the man’s death could have been from exposure to the cold.

The revolutionary life of Fred Hampton. Fred Hampton was an active leader in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), leading their Youth Council of the organization’s West Suburban Branch. Hampton joined the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP) in November 1968. He quickly rose to a leadership position, becoming the deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Party. He organized rallies, established a Free Breakfast program, and negotiated a peace pact among rival gangs. As a rising leader in the BPP, Hampton became the focus of an FBI investigation. On December 4, 1969, Hampton, along with fellow Black Panther Mark Clark, was murdered.

Charges dismissed against Amy Cooper, who called police on Black birdwatcher in viral Central Park video. Cooper, 40, was charged in October with falsely reporting to police that Christian Cooper, who is not related to her, tried to assault her during a confrontation about her dog being off the leash in an area of the park where the leash was required. Cellphone video taken by Christian Cooper of that 911 call showed Amy Cooper emphasizing the man’s race, prompting widespread criticism that she was making a racist attempt to exaggerate the threat.

On Monday (Oct. 26), a judge ordered the release of a video that shows a police officer slamming a handcuffed Black Woman face-first onto the ground. The incident occurred in Calgary, Canada in 2017. Const. Alex Dunn the officer in the video is currently on trial for assault causing bodily harm. Kafi was arrested during the traffic stop and taken to the processing unit. Surveillance footage from inside the police station shows Dunn’s violent interaction with Kafi. While she was standing against a wall to have her picture taken, the cop moves to yank off her headscarf and then slams her to the ground face-first.

A Raleigh woman's terrifying encounter of coming face to face with two men who broke in to her home is now prompting a bigger conversation about what happened to Shanay Porter and how police treated the men they found inside her apartment.Emotions took a new turn when Raleigh police officers responded to Porter's call to 911. As officers questioned the intruders, Porter and her neighbors grew angry and confused about what they saw as a lack of urgency from police. The suspects in her apartment were both white. Porter, who is Black, calls it a double-standard. "If I was a white woman and I called and said it was two Black intruders in my house, I feel like they would've had them out of my house immediately," Porter said.

“Gorilla Glue Girl” can finally run her fingers through her hair after Dr. Michael Obeng’s successful treatment. Tessica Brown, whose hair was stuck with the powerful adhesive for over a month, underwent a procedure at the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon’s office yesterday (Feb. 10). After the four-hour treatment, her hair was finally free from the glue. Brown was put under a light anesthesia during the procedure. Dr. Obeng explained to the outlet how he was able to create a solvent that broke down the chemicals in the glue.
