Three Georgia Men Charged with Federal Hate Crimes and Attempted Kidnapping in Connection with the Death of Ahmaud Arbery

. Three Georgia men were indicted today by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Georgia and charged with hate crimes and the attempted kidnapping of Ahmaud Arbery. The indictment also charges two of the men with separate counts of using firearms during that crime of violence.

Travis McMichael, 35; Travis’s father, Gregory McMichael, 65; and William “Roddie” Bryan, 51, were each charged with one count of interference with rights and with one count of attempted kidnapping. Travis and Gregory McMichael were also charged with one count each of using, carrying, and brandishing—and in Travis’s case, discharging—a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

Counts One and Two of the indictment allege that the defendants used force and threats of force to intimidate and interfere with Arbery’s right to use a public street because of his race. Specifically, Count One of the indictment alleges that as Arbery was running on a public street in the Satilla Shores neighborhood of Brunswick, Georgia, Travis and Gregory McMichael armed themselves with firearms, got into a truck, and chased Arbery through the public streets of the neighborhood while yelling at him, using their truck to cut off his route, and threatening him with firearms. Count One also alleges that the offense resulted in Arbery’s death. Count Two alleges that William “Roddie” Bryan joined the chase and used his truck to cut off Arbery’s route. 

In addition to the hate-crime charges, Count Three alleges that all three defendants attempted to unlawfully seize and confine Arbery by chasing after him in their trucks in an attempt to restrain him, restrict his free movement, corral and detain him against his will, and prevent his escape. Counts Four and Five allege that during the course of the crime of violence charged in Count One, Travis used, carried, brandished, and discharged a Remington shotgun, and Gregory used, carried, and brandished a .357 Magnum revolver. 

All three defendants have also been charged in a separate state proceeding with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, it Attorney Tara Lyons of the Southern District of Georgia, and Deputy Chief Bobbi Bernstein and Special Mitigation

White father and son are arrested after 'chasing down and shooting at black FedEx worker' in Mississippi. A black Mississippi FedEx delivery driver is speaking out after he claims two white men - a father and son - shot at him during his shift in what his attorney describes as a 'copycat' attempt of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.

D'Monterrio Gibson, 24, said that he was working Monday, January 24, when the men,  identified as Gregory Case and Brandon Case, allegedly attacked him. 

He was delivering packages in Brookhaven, a suburb of Jackson, at around 7 p.m. that day when a white pickup truck, driven by Gregory Case, came toward the address of a scheduled drop.

Gibson alleges that Gregory Case tried to drive 'extremely close' to him and cut him off, and that as he drove away, he saw Brandon Case a few houses down in the middle of the road pointing a gun toward the driver's truck, which was a white Hertz van despite him working for FedEx.   

On February 1, Brandon and Gregory Case turned themselves in. Gregory was charged with a count of conspiracy assault, while Brandon was charged with one count of aggravated assault, according to the Mississippi Free Press. 

The men were released on $75,000 and $150,000 bonds, respectively, a day later.

Cleveland radio pioneer Lynn Tolliver Jr. dies. Cleveland radio pioneer Lynn Tolliver has passed away following an undisclosed illness. The death was reported online by former colleagues and business associates.

Tolliver spent his early career in Detroit before returning to his hometown of Cleveland to run a new rhythm-and-blues station, WZAK, in 1982. The station topped the ratings and was nationally recognized into the 1990s with Billboard Magazine Awards for unusual marketing and promotional stunts, such as a contest for the world’s largest cockroach — a prank which was referenced in one of the final episodes of "Hill Street Blues" in 1987.

Tolliver himself, as morning DJ, was recognized for his cutting-edge music sensibility. He was also nearly killed in a shooting during a robbery at the station in 1985. The crime has never been solved.

In 2000, Tolliver was the first black recipient of the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters’ Excellence in Broadcasting award.

He was also a musician, putting out songs on Akron-based Heat Records with his group, Sexual Harrassment, which were later sampled by Kanye West and Black Eyed Peas – the latter leading to a lengthy lawsuit.

Video of the fatal shooting of James Williams, a 46-year-old Black man, was released Thursday by police in Canton.

The wife of a Canton man shot and killed by a police officer on New Years Day is demanding justice, saying her husband was the one placed in an unsafe situation by police.

According to Canton police, officers went to the 2300 block of 10th Street SW on Saturday after getting a call about shots being fired.

Police said an officer confronted a man on scene and that the man started shooting.

Canton Police Chief Jack Angelo said the officer feared for his safety and shot the man.

He’s been identified by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation as 46-year-old James Williams.

Williams’ wife Marquetta told 19 News that they were in their backyard ringing in the new year when the shooting happened.

“My husband and I both went out there to shoot guns in the air, like everybody does to celebrate,” Williams said.

She said James, known by friends and family as Roe, was behind a 6-foot high wooden privacy fence

“You can’t see in. You can’t see out,” she said.

Marquetta said her husband wasn’t firing at an officer, rather still shooting into the air and even more, didn’t know police were on the other side of their fence.

“We didn’t know who it was when it happened because nobody said anything. They didn’t say: ‘Stop, freeze, police!’ Nothing, they just shot him,”

Williams said her husband was the one put in the unsafe situation, not the police officer.

“His life was in danger, because you didn’t announce yourself,” Williams said. “That’s cold-blooded and I’m not going to rest until he does get justice, period.”

Video captured a man bursting into flames after being tasered by police. The New York attorney general is investigating.

The New York attorney general's office is investigating the death of a man who burst into flames when he was tasered by police, according to a statement released Friday.

The attorney general's office released two videos that show the October 30 encounter between Jason Jones, 29, and officers from the Catskill Police Department.

The first video shows Jones and three officers in the police station lobby. Jones seems upset and appears to be staggering as he moves around the room. At one point he takes off his shirt.

The second video shows Jones squirting what appears to be hand sanitizer on his body and head. An officer fires his taser while Jones is out of frame. Immediately there's a huge flash of light and Jones reappears in frame with his upper body and head engulfed in flames. He rolls on the ground in an apparent effort to put out the flames. Police then fled the room And shut the door behind them Leaving Jones to burn.
