Chocolate Croissants episodes

  • Episode 17: Jimi Haha (Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Mend The Hollow)

Jimi Haha is someone we've looked up to as a musician and entrepreneur. Joining us in the CCCompound, Jimi talks about his early hustle of starting his own record label and creating distribution. His mix of creativity, sales skills, community building, and fearlessness led to two major label record releases (which we still love). We dig into that journey and then his transition to the many creative projects he contributes to now. In addition to his bands (including a new record as Mend The Hollow), Jimi is a magazine publisher and gallery artist. He's also a devoted father and husband with a lifetime of wisdom and charisma that he kindly shares with us on this episode. www.jimihaha.com

  • Episode 16: Mike Dawes (Fingerstyle guitarist)

Mike had a day off from his US tour and joined Matt and Jordan before getting back to Mario Kart 64. Although based in the UK, Mike literally travels the world...even where there's been an ISIS presence. We dig into lifestyle, risk and fear, productivity, the benefits of being a black sheep, and more. Mike is at the forefront of a music genre, tours as a solo artist and as lead guitarist for the singer of The Moody Blues, had a legit viral video, has a thriving business as a music educator, and is about to release his second record independently....all before turning 30. And as impressive as all that is, he's just as impressive in conversation. There's a ton to unpack in this one. Enjoy!

  • Episode 15: Chef Josh White (Owner of smoke.)

Josh White is our first guest at the CCCompound. He shares with us his journey that led him from working in the music industry in Hollywood, to hitting rock bottom at 38, to creating one of the most buzzworthy BBQ brands in Maryland. Dude is entertaining as hell (and leverages this to generate big business through social media), got fucked on an reality show, spent two years perfecting a dry rub, and claims ownership of Best BBQ in Baltimore! No matter your passion or career path, there's a ton to learn from Josh as the three of us help to extrapolate the universal value in his story. Check Josh and smoke. out: @hickorysmokedgoodness

  • Episode 13 w. Bill Oberrender

Bill and his stories were introduced to the Chocolate Croissants Podcast in Episode 12, but man does he have A LOT more to say. In episode 13, while on a ferry in the viking sea, Matt got a chance to sit down with Bill for a three hour conversation about everything from Bill’s childhood, to what it was like growing up going to shows in the mid-atlantic region of the US, and how he beat the shit out of some gangsters to avenge a family member. This episode contains content that is violent and sexual in nature, and it is most definitely meant for a mature audience only. It’s fun, it’s intense, it’s sad, it’s scary, but there’s a great moral to it all, and we’re happy to share it here. Without further explanation, get to know Bill.

  • Episode 12 w. Jeff Holcomb (Part 2) feat. Bill Oberrender

We listened to your feedback and brought back Jeff Holcomb to finish his story. Recorded during Periphery's 2017 European tour, Jeff chats about almost being attacked by a mountain lion, the fear of not having a plan, and how psychedelics helped him see things more clearly. Matt and Jeff are also joined by the ever-entertaining Bill Oberrender who chimes in to discuss working in the music touring business and his experiences with DMT. Grab some popcorn and dig in.

  • Episode 11

If last week was loose, this was the flip. We put our communication skills to the test in this one, in our most direct episode to date. We start with a full debrief from Episode 10 and hashed out disagreements and assumptions. We talk about the ways in which we've learned how improve our communication with family, too. A community member submits a question we end with about knowing when to cut someone important, but toxic, out of our lives.

  • Episode 10

We admit, this was the loosest we've been on this podcast. Jordan was delirious and shares both his amazing but long day, and some shit news he got this week. Our Facebook Live feed got cut, but not before we call out Kevin The Drummer who actually drives over and joins us on this episode. We think he's the blueprint for being a successful artist...and he's only 20. Many of you will see yourselves in him and we hope his story inspires you. Matt explains why we should always be prepared for gigs and Justin shares how he learned to become present when performing...for the second time.

  • Episode 9

It's been a month since we've seen each other and we're excited to catch up in person. Matt shares his experiences from the European tour. Jordan and Justin talk about the community members that have reached out and the connections they've made. We also note how some of you have stepped up as leaders in our Facebook group. Some other topics we dig into include: knowing your audience for effective communication, presenting to the world in authentic ways, when experiencing stress is actually a good thing, and differences in dealing with the loss of a pet.
