Welcome to Episode 8 of Chop Chop. I am delighted to be joined by Kate Lawlor-Lyne, Head Chef at Perry Street in Cork City. Kate previously owned and was Head Chef of Fenns Quay Restaurant.
Kate began her career at 16 with her first kitchen job in the Cup and Saucer Cafe, making everything from cakes to lasagnes and the best of scones.
In 1998, Kate attended CIT, whilst there she was a member of the culinary team and won a scholarship to the US. After a few years working, Kate found herself in Fenns Quay which she’d later take on and run. During this time, Kate returned to CIT to do a Culinary Arts Degree, this is where I first met Kate. Kate also taught on the Ashton Adult Education Programme. After running Fenns Quay for 9 years we took the hard decision to close.
Kate moved to the UK for 5 years where she worked with A Rule of Tum working across their portfolio. Having now returned to Cork, Kate is Head Chef of Perry Street and now with a family in tow.
In this episode we chat about:
Kate’s career over the last 25 years
Winning a scholarship to America
Taking over Fenns Quay in her 20’s
How incredible Cork is- full of great culinary talent, producers and restaurants
The reality of running a business and the challenges
