Established in the Victorian era where powered passenger ships were a novelty, P&O had a turbulent youth. Changing technologies, wars and the Suez Canal caused great turmoil for the line, with the opening of the Canal almost bankrupting P&O. However, the company rebounded, going on to establish reliable steamship services to Australia and with that, they changed a nation. Many Australians can trace their heritage back to a voyage on a P&O ship.
