That time a passenger ship sunk in Sydney.
Start with a look at the line voyages - ships were a way of transporting people to and from places and also carried the mail.
Australia's big 2 - P&O and Orient Line.
Orient line ran clipper ships but in the 1870s moved to steam ships.
Austral was their second built ship. On her second voyage to Sydney she sunk in the harbour!!
How did it happen? The disaster occurred during the coaling process so I can explain that.
She was then RAISED and it was the single biggest engineering feat in the Australian colonies at the time.
She returned to service and ran for many years to come.
