There are DJs who stand for a genre. Chris Gavin charts his own path.
From the clubs of Marseille to stages across Europe and beyond, this DJ, producer and artistic director has never accepted being confined to a single box. Progressive, house, indie dance, dark disco, techno, in his world, these words are not genres but stages of a journey. His sets begin somewhere and take you elsewhere, driven by the same obsession: tension building, groove settling in, progression unfolding without obvious shortcuts. At times hypnotic and dark, at others luminous and melodic, his music always carries a distinctive breath, deep, organic and often charged with a resolutely rock energy.
That freedom was not invented behind a mixing desk. It comes from further back, from another musical life: years spent as a rock guitarist, playing on stages throughout the 1990s before electronic music gradually took over. The turning point came through his work with Rick Pier O’Neil, followed by Garbage Records, where Gavin became both remixer and label manager. He later crossed the Channel to join the London-based Alola agency under the guidance of Omid 16B, a chapter that sharpened his writing and broadened his perspective on electronic music.
Over the years, his productions have found a home on labels with radically different identities, including Renaissance, Selador, Desert Hearts Black, Bonzai Progressive, Side Up Works, Fall From Grace and Ray Of Light. A constellation that, in itself, reveals the breadth of his musical territory.
But Chris Gavin has never limited himself to a single facet. With Danse Alice, the project developed alongside producer Remain, he opened another door, darker, more electric and more rock-driven, releasing music on Lumière Noire, Ombra International, La Dame Noir, New Day Everyday and Throne of Blood. Two sides of the same musical language: hypnotic depth on one side, a rawer and more indie energy on the other. That duality is not a contradiction, it has become his signature.
Artists including John Digweed, Laurent Garnier, Chloé, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Damon Jee and Curses have supported his work over the years. Their support reflects the ability of his music to move naturally between scenes that are often considered separate.
In 2018, Gavin added another chapter to his story by founding Danceteria in Marseille, a club conceived less as a venue than as a laboratory, where international artists, emerging scenes and different generations of DJs meet.
More than twenty years behind the decks have taken him far beyond France to Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Colombia, Mexico and Liberia.
Yet what defines Chris Gavin is not the geography of his career. It is a conviction that has grown stronger over time:
Music is not a genre you choose, but a journey you undertake.
THE JOURNEY IS THE GENRE.
