Imagine checking your net worth every morning. One day, you open your accounts and your net worth is the highest it’s ever been. Maybe your investments have been doing well, your home equity is up, and you feel like you're finally seeing the results of years of discipline and good financial decisions. Then a week later, you check again and your net worth is down 5%. You didn't lose your job. Your income didn't suddenly disappear and you didn’t have any unusual expenses. The companies you own through your investments didn't suddenly become bad businesses. Your long-term financial plan is exactly the same as it was a week ago. But emotionally, it feels like you lost something.
This is one of the biggest psychological challenges of building wealth.

Building wealth requires consistency, patience, and the ability to think years ahead. But there's a problem with thinking that far into the future. We tend to imagine our financial future as a slightly better version of our financial present. If you have $100,000 invested, you might imagine having $200,000 someday. If you earn $80,000 a year, you might imagine eventually earning $100,000 when you retire. We naturally take what we know today and project it forward. But that may be one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
