Lent is a time to take off our masks and come to Jesus as we are. In the first week of this series, Pastor Chad will unpack Matthew 6:1-4 and examine the questions: What motivates us to act religiously and/or devoutly? Is it duty, approval, guilt, people pleasing, or something else other than God?
You will walk away from this message with a clearer understanding of what it might look like to enter the secret places of devotion that bring pleasure to God, take off our masks, and come as we are expectantly devoted to the God who gives us life and freedom.
Discussions Questions:
1. What was your biggest takeaway from this message?
2. Why do you think Jesus emphasizes secrecy in giving to the needy?
3. In what ways does the cultural emphasis on recognition, praise, and being "seen" sometimes influence your personal motivations for giving or serving? How much do you struggle with that tension?
4. What practical steps can we take to ensure that our giving and serving are motivated by genuine love and compassion rather than a desire for recognition or approval?
5. Pray for one another.
