Promise Given- The OT manner by which the Holy Spirit interacted with people- Did the people have any idea what that would look like?- In the midst of unfaithfulness God promises the Spirit- God desires a nearness, an intimacy and relationship!- It's in the person of Jesus...- John 7:37-39 - John 14:26 3. The Promise is a Person- On the last day of the feast...- That is the type, but I am what all this pointed to!- Jesus is the source of life- From an extrinsic to the intrinsic ... The supernatural roots of our faith (v2)- To us, God is a "sudden" God- God's dealings with us are always supernatural in their origins- Moses- Elijah- When God's people walk with God, the Acts of God happen- In the OT... From a myopic view to a big picture point of view...• Even after all that they had been through the disciples stilllacked the ability to have a different “vision”• The disciples were very short sighted and concerned with temporal things• In competition with each other• Concerned with Israel’s fortunes• “So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6 )• Jesus, once again, gets their attention (focus people!)• We see it where the cares of this world consume us...• Obsessions with things that really don’t matter... • Makes a very Trinitarian statement here... • Ultimate authority in determining the events of history is consistently ascribed to God the Father among the persons of the Trinity.2. The power promise...• Jesus uses a “But” here to get their attention• The key to living a life that is more big picture, more Kingdom concerned is contained here.• Not externally imposed, but a internal motivation by God’s Spirit.• The Old Testament - the Holy Spirit came on certain people, at certain times, for certain purposes.• This new anointing is for all time - for everyone, for life.• This new work of the Holy Spirit after Pentecost brought several benecial results:• More effectiveness in witness and ministry (1:8),• Effective proclamation of the gospel (cf. Matt. 28:19 )• Power for victory over sin (Acts 2:42 –46; Rom. 6:11 –14; 8:13–14; Gal. 2:20 ; Phil. 3:10 )• Power for victory over Satan and demonic forces (Acts 2:42 –46; 16:16–18; 2 Cor. 10:3 –4; Eph. 6:10 –18; 1 John 4:4 )• Wide distribution of gifts for ministry• The disciples still experienced an OT anointing throughout the gospels... evidenced by their repeated misunderstandings of the Spirit lled Jesus.• Power for them meant to include both the power to preach the gospel effectively and also the power (through the Holy Spirit) to work miracles conrming the message.• The internal issues of myopia and release from them were probably not comprehensible to them having not experienced it. 3. Jesus taken up to heaven• The 40 days were up... Jesus had left them• Reaction was different than at the crucixion - Joy, expectation• They were going to get more than they expected• The two angels• Were present for pivotal occasions... Jesus birth, in the garden, resurrection and here.• Their job was to help the disciples interpret the ascension• Can you imagine the conversation they might have had looking at the sky gazing disciples? man, I wish Pentecost would happen already.• Signal of the quiet before the storm... Pentecostal anticipation• And... The return of Jesus - Only a few saw him leave, but everyone will see Him return... in the cloud of God’s glory. There will be no doubt!So what ultimately can we take away from this account?• The promise of the Spirit is rock solid• He does what Jesus said He does• Jesus had to return to the Father so that the Spirit could be poured out• Release to experience the Kingdom of God.• Our appetites should be whetted for more of Him and His presence• Why? Yes for personal salvation and its personal benets, but the purposes of God• Grace without mission will leave us self absorbed and, quite frankly lazy.
