In chapter 7 of the sermon on the mount, Jesus tells us there is a way that leads to destruction and there's a way that leads to life.  How can we choose the path that leads to life?

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus speaks about 2 very important aspects of the Christian's life - how they use their wealth and how they handle troubles and difficulties. Jesus calls us to store up treasure in Heaven, rather than here on Earth and to not be anxious, but trust in God.

Jesus warns us against hypocrisy – publicly faking righteousness, rather than privately living faithfully. He calls us to give, pray and fast, knowing we are seen by our Father in Heaven and he will reward us.

As Jesus preaches in the Sermon on the Mount, he begins to challenge his disciples with a standard of righteousness even higher than given by the law in the Old Testament.  He says “Your righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and the Pharisees” and “You must be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect”.  Who then can be saved?!

Jesus speaks to his disciples and reveals their identity as salt and light in the world.  We need to live this out in obedience to how Jesus describes our true identity.

What kind of people are happy in the Kingdom of Heaven?  Jesus tells us in the opening 12 verses of Matthew 5 in the Sermon on the Mount.  The attitudes of the Beatitudes may surprise you.

As Jesus uses the word "blessed" in the Beatitudes at the start of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls Christians to a blissfully happy life, as we draw happiness from the promise of the Kingdom of Heaven contained in these verses.

In 3 stories Jesus shows his astonishing transformational power.  He brings light in the darkness in Zebelun & Naphtali, his call makes Peter, Andrew, James & John change career and heals the lives of many in Galilee in this section of Matthew's Gospel.

Jesus fulfils all righteousness by being baptised and by overcoming Satan's temptations in the wilderness. In this passage we are shown what Jesus' goodness looks like and why Jesus' righteousness is important

Matthew 3 introduces us to an extraordinary man, John the Baptist.  His lifestyle challenges us, his message is critically important, but most of all he spends his entire ministry pointing to the one who is mightier, Jesus Christ.
