Sermon Notes for May 15, 2016”One Thing Is Needed”Luke 10:38-42Pastor Eric SauderJesus as he travels to Jerusalem with his disciples is showing us what it means to follow him, to pick up our cross and live for him as our Master, Savior…this story is so important because it is so ordinary, dealing with the everyday stresses of life.1. A Home of Hospitality (38) – “they went” - it is not just Jesus in the house, it is probably filled with men…all sitting before Jesus and listening to his teaching.– “entered a certain village” – The village is Bethany, where Mary and Martha live with their brother is Lazarus, who Jesus raised from the dead (John 11:3).– It was Martha who welcomed Jesus into their house (Luke 7:44-45).– This is good hospitality (Romans 12:13).2. Sitting as a Disciple (39) – Mary is one of those sitting at the feet of Jesus“sitting at the feet” means being a disciple, a student (Luke 8:35, Acts 22:3). But in that time and culture it was held by everyone that women should not be in the position of a disciple. Jesus’ attitude towards and treatment of women were quite revolutionary in his day, always treating them with dignity and respect (1 Peter 3:7).3. Stress and Service (40) – “distracted” – “to be dragged around in different directions.” a. What has become central: “me” (40) b. Telling the Lord what to do c. A gentle answer – (41)4. Choose the Good Thing (42) – Martha is concerned with “many things”…Mary is concerned with “one thing.”5. It will not be Taken Away (42) – “…Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."– What is the one thing that lasts, they cannot be taken away from you? (Luke 8:12)– That is the most important thing.
