You didn't get here by yourself.

As Joshua prepares God's people for what comes next, he calls them to remember. Remember the battles God fought for them. Remember the wilderness where God provided. Remember the people who sacrificed before them. And remember that not one of God's good promises had failed.

Moses tells the Israelites to remember the wilderness—but not with nostalgia.

In Deuteronomy 8, God's people are preparing to enter the Promised Land when Moses calls them to look back honestly. The wilderness included hunger, uncertainty, failure, and waiting, but it was also where God provided, guided, and shaped His people.

The same can be true of our own wilderness seasons. Not everything that happens to us is good, but God can be at work even when we cannot see it. Sometimes it is only years later that we recognize how God was with us every step of the way.

And when life is going well, Moses gives us another important warning: don't forget the God who brought you through.

God was preparing Joshua long before anyone knew he would become the next leader of Israel.
