The repetitive brevity of Psalm 67 is a delight. Intertwining God’s saving power and His justice, the psalmist calls us to praise Him among all the nations to the ends of the earth. And as we worship Him this way, we should expect Him to do something with that worship, affecting all the peoples and nations.

We should be continually asking “What praise is due to God?” Further, the answer to this question must come from God’s Word and then be put into habitual practice. This week’s passage gives us three main ways (at least) to answer the question of due praise, all of which allude richly to our Savior.

When high-handed wickedness is on display we can be rightly troubled and provoked. When this happens, however, we need to keep the wicked in proper perspective by pondering God’s judgments. Doing this allows us not only to address the wickedness at hand but also causes us to rejoice in God Himself as our refuge—much to the chagrin of the wicked, whose true purposes are being revealed.

Shakespeare, through Hamlet reflecting on the inescapable troubles of life, aptly calls death “the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns…” David, on the other hand, shows the undiscovered country of the believer when dry and weary to be very different. That country is sanctuary and satisfaction with God Himself, and its discovery is filled not only with refreshing delights but also answers the otherwise inescapable threat of death.

God is sovereign over words, and He is equally sovereign over silence. Waiting upon God in personal silence demonstrates this, but so too does the heart that pours itself out (see v. 8) when He has not yet seemingly answered. God uses our silence and His own to accomplish His will in our lives as well as to bring silence to His enemies.

In Psalm 61, David shows us what the heart of a good king looks like. This immediately applies to all who have regal responsibilities, whether in the home or all the way to a head of state. And ultimately, this Psalm teaches us about the rule of Christ, the King, in our lives and world.
