  • Jacob: Broken Religion

Often people turn to God because belief in a deity brings comfort in hard times. Sometimes we think serving a deity will grant us entrance into the truly "blessed" life. Jacob- now a man on the run because of his deceit and duplicity- has an encounter with the Divine presence. God comes to him and offers him blessing. But Jacob, instead of surrendering himself to God, tries to use religion in order to manipulate God. In this sermon, we examine all the ways that religion can get in the way of an authentic encounter with God.

  • Renew the City: Craft

Work was an important but often overlooked way that the earliest Christians transformed their world. Their work was the often unspoken backdrop through which they lived out their faithfulness to Christ. We (modern Christians) have a harder time seeing and pointing out that backdrop because we have, over the years, lost the beauty and significance behind the concept of vocation.

  • Renew the City: Mercy

    Acts 3:1-10

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

  • Reimagine Church: Spiritual Depth

    Acts 2:42-47

What does it mean to be spiritual? Some have said that the essence of spiritual depth is how much you know. Others have pinned spirituality to a specific emotional experience. Still others would say spiritual depth is marked by what you are doing in the world. In this sermon, we see that the essence of authentic spirituality is knowing God and how practically you can grow in your knowledge of and love for Him.

  • Reimagine Church: Community
What if you don't have to be alone and anxious of others truly knowing you? What if the worst of you could be known and you could finally find a place to be loved? This is Saul's (the Apostle Paul) story. A terrorist and murderer of the early church, yet someone who finds a place to be known and loved in the community he sought to persecute. Listen in as we explore the significance of "being known" and the power found in a vulnerable community.

  • Remember Jesus: Hospitality

    Acts 11:1-18

As we look at the arc of the book of Acts, we see an ever-widening circle of inclusion. But none of the first Christians imagined that grace of Jesus would be extended even to the Gentiles. In this sermon, we look at the story of the Apostle Peter, a man named Cornelius, and one crazy dinner party that changed absolutely everything.
