Although we (and the Jews of the apostle Paul's day) might have been more inclined to see David as ungodly, at least in some respects, Paul's argument that God justifies the ungodly actually includes Abraham as well, the very picture of obedience to the Jews. And in our day, this is the same message we have to help, for example, Roman Catholics see, that Mary (in their eyes, the picture of sinless obedience) needed a savior just as we do. David, Abraham, Mary, they all point to our inability and to the necessary perfect ability of Jesus Christ to save His people, even the ungodly.
