Many of us care about getting on the winning side of the equation – not only in a sport but also in life. Actually, you may be surprised by this, but so did John, the apostle of Jesus. What did he teach about victory and overcoming the world?

We all want to be real and for others to be real with us, but even in our closest relationships it's hard to speak the truth in love. This is what 1 John 4 invites us into – being real and connecting in real ways. But mixed in with those who seek to be real are also impostors; religious frauds who take advantage of people. What are we to do about it?

Inside all of us, there's a deep longing to be loved and cherished, to be seen and heard, to be respected and honored. If we're on the receiving end of that, it's easy to feel great about love; but when we're supposed to be on the giving end it gets more complicated. What if they don't deserve it? What if I find them annoying? What if they've ignored me or hurt me? How do we love our community then?

Life and culture in this world offers us several options that are best "thrown out" – they are seemingly harmless people or situations that when present, we better take a pass. The good news is that we have "sniff tests" available to help us in such moments. Do you know what they are?
