Two popular false claims prevalent today are that Jesus never claimed to be God and that God accepts the worship of all religions. The Bible provides clear answers to both. In clear terms Jesus states that he is God the Son, gives insight into the Trinity, and promises salvation to all who worship God by believing in and submitting to the Son, Jesus Christ.

Chapter 5 marks a transition toward the open opposition to Jesus and his teaching. It begins with the third sign recorded by John, a miracle pointing toward the new creation inaugurated by the incarnate Son of God. The big question Jesus asked a disabled man points to a bigger question for all people: Do you want to be saved?

Nobody wishes for affliction; however, when affliction is used by God to bring salvation and eternal life to a lost sinner, it is a great blessing. The Good News is that Christ came to save sinners. By God’s grace, we can be forgiven and reconciled to God when we receive Jesus as Lord through repentance and

The Good News proclaimed to all people is that “whoever believes” is forgiven, reconciled to God, and has eternal life. As Jesus embarks on mission to seek and to save the lost, he demonstrates that God’s saving love knows no limits.

When we humble ourselves before God and make Jesus the center of all our affections, we will find joy and contentment no matter our circumstances. John the Baptist exemplifies the Christian servant who knows and trusts Jesus. By understanding the sovereignty of God, the plight of humankind, and the gracious gift of salvation by faith in Jesus, John's joy (and our joy) is made complete.

On Resurrection Sunday, we especially look back to that wonderful morning when the tomb was discovered empty, our Lord having risen from the grave in victory. It is precisely because we serve and worship the living Christ that the revelation of God’s love and the promise of salvation by faith in Jesus in that most famous verse (John 3:16) touches our hearts and fuels our desire to proclaim the saving gospel to all people.
