Can we trust God when we don’t understand what he’s doing? Genesis 22 brings Abraham’s faith under extraordinary pressure as God asks him to offer his beloved son, Isaac. Abraham trusts God’s promise, and the Lord provides a ram in Isaac’s place. The story points us to Jesus—the beloved Son whom God gave for us, the Lamb of God who takes away our sin. James 2 brings the challenge home: genuine faith takes shape in costly obedience, in everyday life and in hard times. We are saved by what Jesus has done, and that grace changes how we live.

What difference does grace make? Genesis 21 reveals amazing grace as God keeps his promise and Sarah’s laughter becomes joyful celebration. We see common grace as God establishes Isaac as the promised heir while hearing and caring for Ishmael in the wilderness. And we glimpse transforming grace as Abraham deals peacefully with Abimelech, showing kindness in response to kindness received. Titus 2:11–14 brings us to Jesus, who gave himself to redeem us and make us a people eager to do good. The grace that saves us also trains us—shaping how we live and how we treat others.

Genesis 19:30–20:18 shows that even rescued and experienced believers remain vulnerable to compromise and fear. Lot’s family carries the ways of Sodom with them, while Abraham returns to an old strategy of deception. Yet God remains faithful: he protects Sarah, preserves his promise and continues working through his failing servant. In Gethsemane, Jesus entrusts himself to the Father and gives himself for fearful sinners like us. When we’re afraid, can we really trust God to be for us? Romans 8 gives a resounding answer: nothing can separate those in Christ from the love of God.

Genesis 18–19 raises three big questions about God. Is anything too hard for the Lord? Will the Judge of all the earth do what is just? And how can a holy God save sinners? God keeps his promises, judges wickedness with perfect justice and shows undeserved mercy. Lot is rescued when God remembers Abraham—but we need an even greater righteous man. In Jesus, God remains just while rescuing sinners who trust in him. Jesus is our only refuge and the only hope for our city.

How do we live when we’re tempted to take control? Abram and Sarai know God’s promises, but instead of waiting for him, they try to bring them about themselves—with painful consequences. Yet God sees, hears and remains gracious. God reminds Abraham that he is Almighty and able to do what he has promised. There are two ways to live: taking control or trusting God. We can entrust ourselves to Jesus, our risen Lord, knowing that God keeps his promises.

How can we be counted right with God—and how can we be sure? Abram looks up at the stars and takes God at his word, and God credits his faith as righteousness. Then God seals his promise with a covenant, taking responsibility for its fulfilment. These ancient promises find their fulfilment in Jesus, who was delivered for our sins and raised for our justification. Our confidence rests in the faithful Saviour who keeps his covenant and holds everyone who trusts in him.

Abram has just won an astonishing victory. He has rescued Lot, defeated powerful kings and returned with all the people and possessions they had taken. It looks like the perfect moment to seize the day—but Abram refuses to claim the rewards of victory. He trusts God to keep his promises rather than grasping for control. Jesus also refused the shortcut to glory and chose the way of the cross. Following him means trusting God’s promises and walking his way, even when it costs us.

When God’s way looks uncertain, fear tempts us to grasp for control. Abram protects himself at Sarai’s expense, while Lot chooses what looks most secure. But faith trusts the God who keeps his promises. Jesus refuses every shortcut, walks the costly path of perfect obedience, and secures our inheritance through his death and resurrection. We can leave the future in our Father’s hands because he delights to give us the kingdom.

Humanity keeps trying to build a secure future without God, but we cannot reverse the curse or save ourselves. In Genesis 12, God speaks blessing into Abram’s barren future and promises hope for all nations. Those promises lead to Jesus, who bears the curse and secures the blessing. Our future is not something we achieve. It is received by faith and secured in Christ.
