 Scripture Reference: 1 Samuel 24:1-22

David finds himself in a wilderness on the run from king Saul, which is always a place of temptation. David remarkably resists an alluring temptation to take matters into his own hands with an enemy. David's remarkable actions show us the pathway of resisting our own temptations by entrusting himself to the eternal King who is the righteous and wise judge.

The story of David and Goliath is often told as an example of how we should "slay the giants in our life." But that makes US the hero of the story. King David is picturing US, but rather the Savior that would come and finally be our champion.

As Samuel comes to anoint the new king of Israel, he is surprised by God's choice of David. This initial meeting foreshadows how God will work in and through David. God is deeply concerned with people's hearts AND will bring salvation by way of a humble and righteous king.

In order to fully understand David as the "man after God's own heart" you have to see its opposite. King Saul is an example of a life lived in the allegiance to people's opinions about him, and in the end, it cost him everything.
